This is Watson – an adorable kitty living his life to the fullest despite his crippling disability.
Watson was adopted by Melanie Lusnak from the Almost Home Animal Rescue League in Southfield, Michigan.
He was born with a condition called radial hypoplasia which is a congenital disease that causes deformities of the limbs. What makes his special is the way he has been able to adapt to everyday life.
“I was looking to adopt a kitten and found Watson on Pet Finder,” said Lusnak. “I was looking for a cat with special needs as I had previously looked after a cat with a missing leg.”
When Watson was first introduced to his new home, he did struggle. Little things like roaming the house and stumbling or falling over was a common occurrence and it became clear to Melanie that he would need proper help to adjust.
She was able to locate an animal prosthetist who was willing to help Watson, providing him with prosthetic boots.
“Even with prosthetics, Watson will not be able to walk, run, and jump like a normal cat,” said Lusnak. “The position he is in does not lend to good posture, and just like with humans, this can lead to pain and discomfort.”
Within 6 months to a year, Watson’s progress was unbelievable. He was running around, jumping on things and using the litterbox with the capability and confidence of a regular cat, even without his prosthetic boots.
“It’s extraordinary to see him adapt day to day,” said Lusnak,
Watson and Lusnak are passionate about educating pet owners with disabled cats and providing them with resources and information about how to give your cat the best life you can.
“You just need to have the time and an open mind.” said Lusnak.
