When a couple from Utah were enjoying some leisurely time sledding on a mountain, the last thing they expected to see was some puppies who were in urgent need of help.
But that’s exactly what happened!
Kat and her partner Corey were enjoying a mountainside day out when they spotted the puppies.
They were lost, cold, and fighting for survival.
Kat shared their discovery onto Facebook and wrote:
“WHAT A DAY!!! So yesterday when corey and I were sledding on monte we came across a great pyrenees mama dog that had recently had pups… Loooong story short…weber county search and rescue helped out with a sleigh and we were able to get the puppies off the mountain. They are about 7 wks old.”
Thanks to Kat and Corey’s quick thinking, and with the help of Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, the puppies were quickly transported to safety on a sleigh.
But her post soon gained a lot of attention as people worried about the whereabouts of the mama dog. Kat said:
“We tried to get close but we had no food to tempt her. She was having no part of us…Unfortunately, I was unable to catch the mom. We had to leave her behind.”
Together with the search and rescue team, Kat and Corey began a fundraiser so that the group could make more attempts to search for the mama dog.
“I’m not going to leave any animal on the mountain to starve, especially, it was obvious she had pups,” Kat said.
But sadly, after multiple attempts, the team was unsuccessful. It was a heartbreaking moment, but Kat and Corey had to focus on making sure that the three little puppies survived. It was the least they could do for the pups’ mama.
The team brought the puppies back to Kat’s house where the couple immediately tended to the dogs, making sure that they had warmth, food, and water.
Amazingly, in no time at all, the dogs began to recover. And Kat believes that it was actually down to the mother that the pups were able to recover so quickly. She said:
“They were living in a sheep carcass. She had found a dead sheep and they had eaten, there was nothing left, just a little bit of wool and a few big bones. I’m sure that’s what she’d been eating on all fall.”
Thanks to the mamma’s awesome survival skills, the puppies had been provided with food and warmth. Without this, it is likely that they wouldn’t have survived.
Kat shared a cute video of the pups and it’s clear that they’d settled quickly into life at her home! The sweet little things are play-fighting and having fun like normal pups would. Kat posted a pupdate, saying,
“The puppies went to the vet this afternoon and they are doing very well. They are skinny but are eating everything in sight. They are about 7 weeks old and are old enough to be weaned.”
A few weeks on from the rescue, Kat and Corey had formed such an attachment with the puppies that they decided to adopt one and called him Cashe.
Just look how much he’s grown already! We’re so glad that these puppies will go on to live better lives.
