In February 2018, police officers were responding to a burglary in New Castle, Pennsylvania. The officers arrived at the apartment, expecting everything to go routinely. But when they went inside, they were met with a shocking surprise.
The officers found a tiny puppy locked in one of the apartment’s upstairs bedrooms. The dog was clearly starving—she was so skinny the officers could see practically every bone in her body.
Even though the dog was suffering, she was still joyful when she saw the officers. She wagged her tail and weakly crawled over to greet them.
The shocked police officers quickly picked the miniscule puppy up and took her to her car. Since it was so late at night, they brought her over to their precinct. Then, in the morning, they brought her to Lawrence County Humane Society.
The humane society’s veterinarian checked the little puppy over. They estimated that she was about ten weeks old, and she was so anemic and weak she couldn’t lift her head. On top of all that, she also had a staph infection.
Even though the puppy was going through a lot, she never stopped being joyful:
“In the beginning, we weren’t sure that she’d make it,” Elissa Druschel, vice president of Lawrence County Humane Society, told The Dodo. “She was just so weak and emaciated. But she wouldn’t stop wagging her tail. It was going constantly.”
The Humane Society began giving the little puppy round-the-clock treatment.
They fed her numerous times a day, and they gave her medicine for her staph infection. Slowly but surely, the puppy began gaining strength. The Humane Society decided to name her Miranda.
Lawrence County Humane Society shared Miranda’s story on their Facebook page. The post was shared hundreds of times—everyone was moved by Miranda’s story.

After lots of treatment, Miranda was finally ready for her forever home. Lawrence County Humane Society knew the perfect people to take her in: the police officers who found her.
The police officers who rescued Miranda regularly visited her, making sure that she was doing okay. When it came time to adopt Miranda out, the Humane Society was sure they would be the right people to look after her.
“I think it was always assumed that the officers who found her had first dibs,” Druschel said. “Those guys were her heroes.”
The police officers discussed it, and they decided Officer Mark Lewis would be the perfect dad for Miranda.
“Pretty much right off the bat I knew I wanted to adopt her,” Lewis told The Dodo. “I’m ecstatic to be bringing her home. She’ll never see that kind of life she had ever again. She’ll be the most spoiled little dog you’ll ever see.”
Two months after being adopted, Miranda is as happy as can be. She’s a healthy weight, and she loves her new dad. This puppy never stops smiling!
Officer Lewis also revealed that they are investigating Miranda’s former neglectful owner, and they’ll soon be going to trial:
“This person is going to trial soon and hopefully we get some justice for Miranda. To come from such a bad background to now being so loved by everyone … It’s amazing.”
Miranda had a tough start in life, but now she’s doing amazing! This sweet girl has a great life ahead of her.
