A serene countryside in Flintshire, Wales, was disrupted by the sudden onslaught of Storm Babet.

As floodwaters rose, a small spit of land became the last refuge for three stranded ewes. But just when things seemed bleak, Patsy emerged.

The Welsh sheepdog doesn’t just watch from the sidelines.

No, Patsy sees the unfolding drama for what it is- her cue to run to the rescue.

Llyr Derwydd, a 44-year-old farmer, was the one who captured this heartwarming act of bravery.

He recalls the moment he noticed the stranded sheep, “We thought we’d better go check, make sure all the sheep are safe, and that’s when we saw the three ewes stranded on this little spot on the field.”

As the water continued to rise, the urgency to rescue the sheep became paramount.

Derwydd, concerned for the safety of the sheep, had a moment of inspiration.

He thought of Patsy and wondered if she would be up for the challenge. Without a moment’s hesitation, Patsy took the plunge.

Swimming across the floodwaters, she reached the stranded ewes and, with her impeccable herding skills, guided them to safety.

The farmer admitted that sending Patsy across the waters was a risk.

He said, “It was quite dangerous because I didn’t know how deep it was.”

But he had faith in Patsy’s swimming abilities. He was not only relieved but also pleasantly surprised when Patsy faced no issues during the rescue.

He fondly remarked, “(It) saved me getting wet and getting into a dangerous situation and saved the sheep so it was perfect.”

Patsy’s heroics didn’t go unnoticed.

Social media was abuzz with praises for the brave sheepdog.

While some suggested treating her to a T-bone steak, Derwydd felt that a simple pat on her head, being told “she’s a good girl,” and an extra dog biscuit was reward enough for the hardworking dog.

But the story doesn’t end with Patsy’s heroics.

The aftermath of Storm Babet was felt throughout Flintshire. BBC News reported 17 flood warnings and 22 flooding alerts.

Cars were abandoned, roads became impassable, and towns and villages were isolated due to the floodwaters.

The impact was so severe that 54 schools in the Mold area of Flintshire had to be closed.

Residents faced power outages and disruptions in bus services. Only one bus service was operational, offering transportation through diversions.

The situation was dire, and the community had to come together to navigate these challenging times.

Pastor Ben Midgley estimates that families will be displaced for weeks.

He said, “Our hearts go out to them at this time. But there are people helping in that regard and just here, just keeping a warm atmosphere.”
