The work that some people do to help the animals who need it is truly incredible. Often, that work is never seen or published – silent heroes, if you will.
Occasionally, however, we do get to see the entire rescue process all the way up to adoption, and the stories are simply astounding to see. Like any living creature, these rescue dogs have a past that would shock you.
Hope For Paws is a rescue organization that often films its craziest stories.
They recently got a call from a woman who saw an abandoned dog while doing some TNR work (TNR stands for trap-neuter-return) at a construction site. While helping to reduce the local cat population, she accidentally stumbled upon the dog.
The team came out and found it was a senior dog who lived at the junkyard.
The dog lived under a shipping container and had been there for nine years! After her owner was deported, she was forced to remain behind and became homeless, fending for herself for nearly a decade.
The nearby crew fed her occasionally, allowing her to just barely survive, but it wasn’t a good life.
Thankfully, the working crew fed her once they realized she was homeless, but none of them could ever take her in. Relegated to living a solo life, the poor dog had her fair share of pain. She had been hit by a truck and had lost an eye, not even being taken to a hospital.
After quite a few treats, the old pup slowly started trusting the Hope for Paws workers that were there to help.
They got her from under the container and named her Josephine, or Pheenie for short! She wasn’t aggressive in the slightest and was totally fine with the strangers petting her head and scratching her. Who knows the last time she had physical affection!
The crew took her to the facility and got to work diagnosing and treating the pup.
All of her teeth were rotted out, her eye was missing, and she needed some long-term treatment for a few other things. They started with a bath (her first one in years) and treated the old girl with gentleness and care. She was such a sweet dog, right from the moment they brought her to the vet.
After such a long and hard life, Hope for Paws’ friends at the LA Animal Rescue said they would taker her in for life.
Pheenie loved the warm sun, her new chicken friends, and even the occasional snow! Nearly five months later, it was time for Pheenie to move on from this life. Laying in her favorite spot next to the fireplace, she closed her eyes for the last time.
She had an incredibly tough life, but the last few months were the best she ever had.
While Hope for Paws was sad they didn’t know about her sooner, they were overjoyed that they were able to give the dog a few months of the life she should have had all along.
