Josh and Larry Phillips were out riding a boat on Puget Sound off the coast of Washington when they captured an unusual sighting of something both shocking and hilarious on film.
They’re both avid fishermen, with Josh heading Spawn Fly Fish, a company with a serious passion for fly fishing.
So these guys have seen anything and everything on the water and probably beneath it.
Except for a pair of massive sea lions enjoying the sun on someone else’s boat.
That boat is pretty decent for any normal sized human being but these sea lions are anything but normal.
Just look at how close that tiny boat is to capsizing!
That’s a lot of heft!
Imagine the owner of that boat explaining the situation to the insurance company.
Now depending on the species, sea lions will weigh anywhere from 600 to 2,000 pounds.
So take a wild guess as to how heavy each of those two behemoths are. They’re pretty happy about it too!
Josh was in total disbelief watching the sea lions.
Both mammals look at Josh as if wondering why the humans were watching them.
Like they had every right to be there. Guess you can’t blame them being a fine day out and all.
Hey, whatever floats your boat.
Believe it or not, these fat pinnipeds are super fit for the lifestyle they have. The San Diego Zoo website states:
“A sea lion’s sleek body is perfect for diving deep in the ocean (up to 600 feet, or 180 meters) in search of tasty fish and squid. Because sea lions are mammals and must breathe air, they can’t stay underwater forever! But with the help of nostrils that seal up automatically when they dive, a sea lion typically remain submerged for 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Sea lions are great swimmers, too, reaching speeds of 18 miles per hour (29 kilometers per hour) for short bursts. This helps them escape from their enemies, killer whales and sharks.”
Those whiskers, called a vibrissa, help them around the darker depths, those eyes see really well using a neat trick that utilizes a membrane in the back of their eyes that bounce light back to their eyes.
Sea lions love eating fish, squid, crabs, and clams.
They prefer swallowing whole by tossing the fish or squid up and around until it slides headfirst down their mouth.
For food with hard shells, they use their flat back teeth to crush the shell before swallowing. No unnecessary drama.
Josh and Larry circle around the poor sail boat, continuously watching the huge pair while chuckling to themselves.
The massive mammals could care less, enjoying their day out on a boat. Just like Josh and Larry.
The guys should add “sea lion watch” to their company’s tours.

Spawn Fly Fish got free marketing thanks to these sea lions. Let’s hope the company stays afloat like that tiny boat.
