If you’re a verified cowboy, chasing after horses that have tossed you off their backs is probably a normal part of your day. If you’re a scooter commuter in the Netherlands…
…it’s probably the last thing you’d expect.
When this scooter driver set out for the day, he probably wasn’t expecting to encounter this sort of traffic!
Our driver notices a pedestrian running along the sidewalk along his drive. But she’s not wearing running shorts, or anything that would indicate that she’s out running for fitness. Plus, she’s wearing a helmet. I don’t know how you go for runs…but I rarely consider head protection when I do!
There may be more going on here than it seems…
Our driver has noticed that this pedestrian is not running for the fun of it, but rather she’s chasing something. Like a true hero, he doesn’t simply recognize someone else’s struggle. He pulls over onto the side walk and tells her to hop on the back of his scooter.
And the chase in ON!
As they speed forward, it becomes clear what they’re chasing after…
A loose horse, galloping freely down the road.
It appears that this runaway horse has chosen this time to make its big getaway. It’s at full gallop as fast as it can manage. No rider, and apparently no plans of slowing.
As they round a few corners, they attempt to catch up to it.
They slowly catch up to the horse, who has no idea where to go, running dangerously in the lanes of the road. At least he’s abiding by the local road rules and running down the right side of the road…
They attempt to cut the horse off.
Coming up to a T-junction, they see an opportunity to cut off this pacing pachyderm. Meanwhile onlookers on the opposite side of the road look on in awe at this Wild West style chase down.
They draw close.
The horse slows from a canter to a slow trot, and looks for a second like it’s ready to give up the shenanigans.
Unfortunately however…the horse has more chase in it.
The rider gets off of the scooter in an attempt to grab the gorse and calm it, but as she approaches it runs off again down the road. So close! She runs back to the scooter and they’re off once again on their wild horse chase.
Another long road for the horse to speed down.
Once again they attempt to keep up with the horse which is certainly not looking at any speed limit signs! What’s more, on the scooter they’re able to follow the horse as long as it follows the road, but if it breaks off and runs through that field to the left they will not be able to follow it.
There may be another opportunity to cut it off.
The rider points ahead at the end of the road, another T-junction. This presents them with another chance to get up ahead of it and wrangle it to safety.
They get to the corner ahead of the horse.
Once again, our rider leaps from the scooter and attempts to capture her steed. Unfortunately as with the last time, the horse steams forward, not to be taken in. This is one diehard horse!
After a few more near calls, they eventually catch up to it.
They streak down a street, and once again come within arms reach of the equestrian escapee, before it outruns them yet again. Finally, either because it has at last run out of steam, or because it’s had all the runaway fun it was going to have, the horse slows down enough for its owner to grab its reins.
Off they trot, to ride another day.
This is a harrowing adventure you absolutely have to watch to believe. Seeing how the horse dodges them at every turn is truly impressive, but not as impressive as the rider’s tenacity and the scooter driver’s leap into action to help a stranger. Surely this makes them both honorary Dutch cowpoke.
