The dog needed someone to help him learn to trust again.

There are many reasons why a dog ends up in a shelter.

Sometimes, the dog may have been living as a stray. Other times, an owner unfortunately can’t keep their dog, whether that’s because they’re moving or because they simply can’t afford the animal.

But some of the most heartbreaking stories are the ones of dogs who have been rescued from abusive owners. Sadly, that’s the situation this poor puppy came from.

This little puppy has been living in animal control since being rescued from an abusive owner. From the looks of him, it’s clear he was mistreated. The puppy is incredibly thin, and he’s completely petrified of humans.

His big brown eyes say it all. They show a puppy who is lonely and longing for love and care.

In the video below, a woman from the charity group A Place To Bark records herself rescuing the puppy. It’s the very first time she has interacted with the pup, and the beginning footage is truly heartbreaking to watch.

The puppy backs up as far as he can into the corner when the gates open and the woman approaches.

It’s immediately clear that this beautiful puppy needs to learn how to love and trust again.

The woman extends her hand forwards, beckoning for the puppy to move towards it. He’s understandably hesitant after all he’s been through. It would have been understandable if he completely ignored the woman or barked at her.

But amazingly, this puppy who had been through so much still is full of love for humans. And gradually, he realizes the woman has good intentions.

Then, he moves closer.

The rescue group that saved the puppy, A Place to Bark, has done tons of great work for dogs in need.

This group is dedicated to saving dogs from high-kill animal controls across the United States. They explain more on their website:

“Established in 2001, we mainly work with Animal Control Agencies, rescuing animals from high kill shelters and fostering them until they are healthy. This provides an ideal situation for the animals. They are then placed for adoption through Humane Societies in various parts of the country. We cover all costs for the medical care of the animals with no cost to the Humane Societies.”

Since they first started over 20 years ago, they’ve saved tons of animals from being euthanized. Thanks to this group, many animals have gone on to happy homes.
