Princess has been living in the dark for 10 years.
Princess is a pig and she has been kept inside a dark stall with no daylight whatsoever for 10 years. And who knows what type of food was fed to her and what her living conditions were. Todd of Arthur’s Acres Sanctuary knew that and that’s why he introduced himself slowly and gradually.
At the sanctuary, Princess lived in a stall that was full of daylight, had fresh hay she can lay on, and fed her delicious food.
Every time he came to Princess, he always had a treat for her because food is always a good way to get into someone’s good graces.
He was also always alone because he didn’t want to overwhelm Princess with too many humans or animals at the same time. Todd just sits there without doing anything or making any sudden movements. Princess is scared and any wrong move can disrupt her healing process.
Todd learned that Princess was used to breeding pigs and was subjected to lots of physical abuse.
She does not trust humans.
Todd knows and understands that. That’s why he’s taking his time with Princess’ healing journey. He brought her great-tasting food, which Princess lovingly ate. Todd believe Princess was not fed any food that was sweet or good so he made sure to bring both. But he mostly brought a colorful bowl of fruit and vegetable salad.
Because she lived in the dark for ten years, Princess has also lost her sight. She can only see shadows.
That’s why Todd talked with a soothing voice to reassure Princess that he wasn’t going to harm her and to reinforce her trust in humans again. She didn’t want to be touched either and when Todd touched her even for just a second, she would retreat back into a corner, away from the human.
The whole healing process wasn’t easy.
It took Todd a long time to get Princess to trust him. But when she did, her transformation was incredible. First, Todd placed her bowl of food just outside her stall door to help get her out of her comfort zone.
Then she’d let Todd feed her directly and touch her nose, too!
Sometime later, Princess was able to get out of the stables and onto the grass for probably the first time in her life. And soon enough, Princess was running around the stables, the grass outside, and with other animals. She was unstoppable!
Princess was still wary of any human touching her.
Todd was the only human allowed to touch or pet her. And Todd feels so honored.
Because of Todd’s determination, patience, love, and commitment, Princess is now living her best life.
