Most of us wouldn’t hesitate to help an animal in distress. But what if it meant risking your own life? That’s what a group of good samaritans in Sweden did and risked falling through thin ice to save the life of a moose who had fallen through.
The daring rescue was captured on video.
“On our way to the hole, we saw the moose make several attempts at getting out of the water, but it could neither get up nor break the ice to get into shore,” the video’s caption reads on YouTube. “My partner, Sigrid Sjösteen, eagerly started to chop a pathway to shallower water, where it could reach the bottom and get out. We took turns chopping for about 30 minutes before the moose was out of danger.”
The video begins with Sjösteen skating out onto the ice and using a stick to keep steady. The poor moose can be seen desperately flailing about.
“Watch out, the ice is weak out there,” Sjösteen’s companion warns. “I have no idea what the hell we’re going to do.”
Apparently, Sjösteen does.
He gets alarmingly close to the weakened ice that is a bit watery and starts hacking away. He gets super close to the moose and carves a pathway for the moose to climb up.
The companion starts making moose noises and Sjösteen pokes him a little with his stick to try and nudge him up the path.
“It’s tired,” the companion said. “I guess we’ll have to chop some more.”
Another person takes over to do some chopping in the next scene.
Finally, the moose seems to be making some leeway and swims out a bit. But then he stops. The poor animal looks completely exhausted.
“Come on moose, come on now, come on,” Sjösteen says trying to coax the moose onto land.
Thankfully the moose finally heaves himself up and out of the water.
“Yes!” one of the men says.
Sjösteen gives him the thumbs up.
“There we go,” he says. “What a relief!”
Finally, the great big moose walks off and into the wilderness thanks to the help of a couple of humans. These people could have easily fallen through that ice just like the moose did but they risked that just to make sure that the animal was OK.
Their rescue attempt is nothing short of miraculous. You can watch it below.
