The recovery story for some animals is quite the story to watch. Almost like watching a film play out, recovery has ups, downs, and everything in between. When animals are found in the dumps (sometimes even literally), all it takes is someone to care enough to help them through it.
Bruce Willis… the cat?
Die Hard is definitely a classic, but it isn’t what we are talking about today! Bruce Willis, the actor, is quite the hard-edged, steely-eyed man we all love to watch jump out of an explosion. Mister Bruce Willis, however, is a feline that has had his own battles to fight in life.
Mister Willis was known as “the saddest cat ever.”
When we say sad, we mean it. He hosted a litany of health problems that broke his spirit and his body alike. With scars crisscrossing his body, an injured eye, chipped teeth, and a feline immunodeficiency virus, Mister Willis looked like he had been through hell and back.
You can tell the things someone has been through by looking into their eyes.
Eyes truly are the windows to the soul. You have probably locked eyes with an older man while out on the street or in a park and seen the things he has been through, just in his gaze. People often wear their past like a coat, whether good or bad.
Mister Willis’ past was a heavy burden.
At 6 years old, Mister Willis was middle-aged, as far as cats go. He had lived on the streets for his entire life, and his short but brutal life had been riddled with pain and hurt. When he was finally brought into the shelter, he didn’t have much longer to live in the state he was in.
Once at the shelter, he started getting the treatment that he needed.
Passing infections and healing was a long process for the defeated cat. As he got better, it was still obvious that something was missing. Mister Willis needed something different. As it turns out, it wasn’t something different he needed; it was someone different.
Sandra was looking though the Animal Humane Society of Minnesota.
The “saddest cat around” had recently gotten a new reputation at the shelter, however. He was now seen as “the sweetest and most affectionate boy around!” Sandra was looking through the shelter’s website one day when she saw Mister Willis – and her heart dropped.
To make the connection even more divine, it was International Cat Day!
Sandra KNEW that Mister Willis belonged with her. Her only obstacle was her landlord, who didn’t allow pets. She would visit Mister Wilis often, hoping to keep his spirits up while they waited. Finally, after a whole month of waiting, she got permission to have a pet!
Taking Mister Willis home was the happiest day of Sandras life (and probably Willis’, too!)
Mister Willis completed his transformation! From run-down, sad kitty, to happy and joyful cuddle-buddy! Sometimes we just need someone to care for us when we are down in order to be our best selves.
