Dogs require lots of love and care.

Although dogs are definitely man’s best friend, having a dog is a serious commitment. They need to be regularly walked, fed and watered. On top of that, dogs that have a tendency to grow especially thick coats need a lot of additional grooming as well. One such dog breed is the Bobtail, a kind of Old English Sheepdog known for its shaggy fur. When these animals don’t get the care they need, the results are tragic.

That was what happened to one unfortunate dog in Russia.

Cocos is a Bobtail whose owner in Russia, Gore Zhdanov, had recently passed away.

After Zhdanov died at 79 years old, Cocos was put in the care of some new owners. Unfortunately, the owners didn’t show Cocos any love and care—instead, they neglected the dog and only gave it enough the basic food and water needed to survive without grooming it at all. As a result, his coat got thicker and thicker, dirtier and dirtier, until he could barely even walk.

Cocos had to endure 12 months of this abuse before he was rescued.

When he was brought in, Cocos was in bad shape.

The first thing rescuers did was to give Cocos a proper grooming, cutting off all the excess matted hair. Underneath, though, they found that his skin was irritated and covered in sores and rashes. The hair was extremely unsanitary and heavy enough to keep Cocos weighed down—there was enough that it took six lab techs three hours to cut it all off safely.

Fortunately, Cocos had finally got the love he needed—and the transformation was incredible.

After a cleaning and a grooming, Cocos was a brand new dog! The rescuers filled ‘four 100 liter bags’ with dog hair!

Once all the excess fur and grime was removed, Cocos was able to shine as the beautiful dog he truly is. Those working with him said they were shocked at the condition he was in when they found him:

“He could barely walk and was in a pitiful state. Relatives called us to take him away because they decided they wanted to sell the flat now that [Zhdanov’s] inheritence paperwork had been completed.”

Fortunately, Cocos has even placed in a new, loving home with his owner, Elena Rivvo.

Rivvo is a specialist in caring for Bobtails and has put Cocos on a new diet with vitamins to help him make a swift recovery. Despite the cruelty and neglect Cocos endured, his rescuers and Rivvo stepped in to ensure he lives out the rest of his days with all the comfort and love he deserves.
