Dogs and beaches are two things that definitely go together, especially when the dog is a breed that loves to swim.

However, it is always important to keep a close eye on your pet whenever you are at the beach, doing so can help avoid some very scary situations.

One family had their dog, a springer spaniel named Gwen, at a beach in San Francisco when they lost sight of her.

The family had no idea where the dog had run off to and they spent hours looking for her.

They were not the ones to find her though, a local runner heard some sad cries coming from a large pile of boulders and when he went to check it out he saw the terrified pup.

Gwen had gotten herself lodged in between a few boulders and was unable to free herself.

The jogger attempted to rescue her but was unable to do so, he decided to take a picture and send it to the local Animal Care and Control office so they could help.

Carlos Ortega was the officer who responded to the scene, but the jogger had moved on already and he had no idea where the pup was.

Carlos search high and low for the dog and, using the image the jogger had sent, managed to pinpoint a certain area.

He looked in every single crack and crevice and, soon enough, saw the scared dog looking back up at him.

Gwen was silent as Carlos tried his best to dislodge the boulders, he first tried to leverage it off with a stick but when that didn’t work, he mustered all his strength and managed to push the boulder off with his bare hands.

Gwen was obviously terrified as Carlos reached down to gently lift her out.

He felt at her back legs to check if they were injured and when he didn’t find anything, he set her down carefully.

“The first thing she did,” Ortega says, “was come up and give me a lick. She gave me a nice big kiss on the beard.”

After ensuring Gwen was totally uninjured, he walked her back to his truck where he was able to scan her microchip.

Carlos quickly found the information about Gwen and her owners and he called them right away.

The family was still on the beach searching high and low for their lost dog.

“The look on his face when he saw Gwen,” says Carlos, “before he even knew anything was priceless to me. And when I actually told him where Gwen as at and showed his the pictures, he was just, beyond himself.

Carlos says that the fact the she was microchipped was extremely helpful in getting her reunited with her family quickly and he recommends all pet owners microchip their four legged friends.
