Can you imagine a cow escaping a slaughterhouse?
Just the fact that a cow is able to think of getting away from a slaughterhouse is already unbelievable, but finding out that one can actually escape the place is even more astonishing.
Bonnie, the cow, did all these. And apart from her escape, the cow also found a way to survive in the wild.
For eight months, Bonnie lived in the woods after she ran away from the butcher.
How could this be possible, right? Well, it is, if you happen to meet a kind herd of deers just like Bonnie did.
She was accepted as one of them and she found refuge in their sanctuary.
At only four months old, Bonnie fled from the butcher and ran straight for the woods.
She left the group while the other cattle were being herded into trailers after being sold.
When she disappeared, the community tried to look for her thinking that a cow as young as her will not be able to stay long in the wild.
The neighborhood was promptly informed about Bonnie’s escape, and despite a few people stumbling into the woods catching sightings of the cow, no one was able to catch her.
Weeks went by, and Bonnie was still missing.
Many were amazed that the cow had made it through the winter in the woods by herself.
The farm animal wasn’t alone, they soon discovered.
After some time, wildlife cameras caught a glimpse of the mysteriously missing cow.
Bonnie was able to survive because a herd of deers welcomed her and treated her as their own.
A wildlife volunteer named Becky Bartels helped her out by putting food and building a shelter for Bonnie so she can survive the winter season.
An unforgiving northeastern winter was awaiting Bonnie, who is a domesticated animal.
Becky owns the property where Bonnie was having fun with her deer friends.
She began approaching the cow after spotting Bonnie on a camera she had set up in the area. She would trudge through the snow every day of the winter while pulling a sled with food and blankets for Bonnie.
After her previous meeting, the cow was scared of people, but over time, she warmed up to Becky and started approaching her for pats and treats.
Bonnie was accepted by the deers and she also copied some of their traits.
Deer and cattle are herd animals, according to sanctuary staff, and although Bonnie didn’t quite resemble the other deer, she fit in with the family right away.
Volunteers claimed Bonnie also adapted to a deer attitude, lurking behind trees and eluding people like her new herd.
Bonnie may be accepted in the deer family, but she is still a cow who is not designed to survive the winter outside the farm.
With neighbors threatening to slaughter the cow if she walked onto their land, Becky knew that Bonnie is better off in a secured sanctuary rather than in the woods.
The Bartels sought assistance from Farm Sanctuary as a result.
Farm Sanctuary is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing abused, neglected, and abandoned farm animals with a loving forever home where they can relax and not have to worry about being consumed as food.
A rescue team from Farm Sanctuary was dispatched to transport Bonnie to her new residence from the wild.
After a few failed attempts, they managed to safely corral and tranquilize Bonnie before loading her into a vehicle and transporting her to Farm Sanctuary.
