Inhumane acts to animals sometimes leave emotional and physical marks after they survived the ordeal.
Through the help of private organizations, these animals are given second chances to live their lives fully.
Here’s a romantic and encouraging story about a rooster who falls in love with a hen in a rescue shelter in the South Central Pennsylvania region.
Shrimp the Rooster was rescued along with another rooster.
They were both abandoned and it is common in roosters to get abandoned.
Shrimp is very docile so he’s always getting beat up outside.
So the owner of the sanctuary brought him in.
Basil the Hen was part of their larger rescue back in 2021.
She was meant for someone else’s dinner before the rescue.
She lost her right leg due to an infection.
While she’s also inside the house, Shrimp managed to go through the baby gate and into Basil every morning.
It felt like an instant connection said Amanda, who started the Here With Us Sanctuary back in 2018.
During snacks, he lets them have her first.
He sometimes just stares at Basil while she’s eating.
Shrimp wants to be by her side the whole time.
He likes to be as close as possible to Basil.
Perching on the side of Basil’s wheelchair.
Shrimp would also do little dances for her and go around the wheelchair, trying to impress Basil.
When it’s time for a visit to the vet, they both go.
The team at the sanctuary thought that it stresses and worries either one of them while the other is away.
Amanda said the two need to always be monitored, so it’s best to keep them inside the facility rather than trying to place them with the rest of the rescued birds.
“They sleep separate(ly),” Amanda said in the interview. “They go outside too now that it’s warming up.”
Amanda also shared that Basil is not a fan of other chickens.
“She can’t be with other hens, he can’t be with other roosters,” Amanda added.
She drove them off, but not Shrimp.
She’s often commented about putting human emotions on Shrimp and Basil.
Sometimes Amanda is also asked how would she know what they feel since they are just chickens.
She answered, “If you actually saw them interacting, it’s just so amazing.”
“People have the toughest time connecting with chickens,” Amanda said. “They’re so disconnected with the chickens they purchase in the grocery store and then the actual animal themselves.”
Love is the universal language.
Amanda also mentioned in the interview that Shrimp is very smart.
He knows his name and they treat him, along with the other rescues, the much needed love, attention, and care they deserve.
Since the Cornish Cross chickens grow big and heavy so quickly, they often get leg issues and heart attacks even after rescue.
Keeping them as pets would be very challenging.
But with the right diet, Basil can live as long as Shrimp.
