When Roman found his way to the Carson Animal Shelter in Los Angeles, California, he was in terrible shape and had a long road to recovery ahead of him. Having been out on the streets and laying on the Los Angeles concrete all day, Roman’s beautiful white fur was worn down all over, so much so in some spots that you could see his actual skin. Due to the poor condition of his fur, Roman had terrible infections as well, and his teeth had been as worn down due to his hard years on the streets.
When volunteers at the Carson Animal Shelter found and rescued Roman, they soon realized he was deaf as well. On top of all the hardships this abandoned dog had been going through, he could not even hear. Hoping they could find a home for Roman that could change his life entirely, the animal shelter volunteers posted pictures of him online in an attempt to attract possible adopters.
Tye Friis happened to be searching through posts just as the one made by the Carson Animal Shelter, and upon seeing Roman he knew he had to bring him home with him. Unable to leave the dog in the shelter, Tye adopted Roman as for foster care.
“When I went down, it was just an instant connection. He was the most grateful thankful dog you can imagine. He was like, ‘Thank you, I don’t want to be here'” Tye said.
Due to Roman being unable to hear, Tye relied on hand gestures to communicate with the dog. Roman seemed to understand Tye fairly quickly, and the two began to build an amazing relationship. Having to deal with major damage to his teeth, infections, and fur loss, Tye and Roman had some large obstacles to overcome on his path to recovery.
With Tye’s care and affection, Roman was slowly able to regain his health and his beautiful white fur began to grow back all over his body. Tye fostered Roman for four months before a family was ready to permanently adopt him. Diane and Rob Whitaker, the permanent adopters, knew they wanted to adopt Roman from the moment they saw him. They took Roman away from Tye, but promised that would not be the last time they saw each other.
Five months after Roman had come home with Diane and Rob Whitaker, the couple made the trip out to Tye’s place and brought Roman back to visit him. Roman was thrilled to see Tye and was eager to hop into his arms. Tye helped bring some life back into Roman, and thanks to his help, Roman now lives a wonderful life with a great family.
