A horse has gotten stuck in a muddy pit!
Whether you’re a human or a four-legged animal, it is never easy to get stuck in a mud pit.
It’s even more difficult for this filly because they don’t have hands like humans who can use their hands to grab grass or something sturdy to pull themselves out.
Luckily, a couple of kind souls from the Help Alberta Wildies Society spotted her.
It was such a blessing that they did because this filly was in the middle of nowhere. She was spotted at a remote trail and she could have been stuck there for days if they hadn’t come by.
Even though horses can last up to three days stuck in the mud, no one wants that.
Besides, even if she was only there for a couple of minutes or hours, the horse can suffer from shock, stress, and fear. The stress can cause circulatory shock and her cardiovascular system to fail. Her organs and tissues could also fail from the lack of oxygen.
If she stays longer in the mud pit, she could develop pulled tendons, have leg scratches, or develop skin infections.
She had to get out of there.
The rescuers quickly devised a plan to get her out. First and foremost, they gave her reassurance so that she’d stay calm through the whole process of getting her out. Then it was time to rescue this filly.
These men and women were not afraid to get down and dirty to get the job done.
Because these rescuers knew they were going to the middle of nowhere and remote trails, they were prepared with ropes, rain boots, and a 4×4 vehicle. Before they set out on their journey, they probably thought they wouldn’t need the stuff they brought but you know, ‘just in case.’
Looks like their instincts were spot on!
Because these were exactly what they needed to rescue the filly stuck in the mud pit.
First, they tried a rope to pull her out but it wouldn’t work. The filly couldn’t pull herself out of the mud pit. They needed to think of a different plan.
They had long, sturdy straps in their vehicle so they used that instead.
They attached the straps to the filly under and around her shoulders. Then they connected the other end to the vehicle so the vehicle could pull her sideways.
It was working!
Then one of the men yelled at the driver to stop. What was wrong?
Nothing was wrong. Some hay came within mouth’s reach of the filly and she began to eat. This poor filly was stressed out and she was also hungry.
They let her have her fill before continuing with the rescue.
The rescuers gave her even more hay so that she’ll have the strength to pull herself up.
While she was eating, the rescuers continued to secure the filly so they can pull her out of her ordeal. They even got down on all fours in the mud to readjust the straps so it doesn’t hurt her tail.
They pulled her from the front and kept encouraging the filly to push herself out of the mud pit.
Just a little more!
Just a little more and yes! She was finally out of the mud pit. Thank goodness these rescuers happened to be at the right place at the right time.
On shaky legs, the filly stumbled her way toward the forest.
After a few wobbly steps, she looked back at her rescuers and seemed to nod her head to them. Maybe it was her way of thanking them for rescuing her.
The rescuers were just happy they could help.
