The general image we have or horses is one of majestic, proud animals who are rambunctious and who like to run free. To evoke the spirit of these animals is to be romantic and wild, in touch with one’s emotions. As a result of the ideas we have about these animals, we may not really understand how closely these animals bond with one another. We may also not think that no matter how proud or majestic they may be, they also get in trouble sometimes and need help.
That was the case in one video which has quickly made its rounds on the internet.
As the clip begins, a rescue team is filming a mare and her foal in a wide open field.
The clip was captured in Gower, South Wales on the Loughor Estuary marshland where something unusual was happening. “It’s in her mane, it’s in her mane,” one of the cameramen says. As it turns out, the mother somehow got her hind leg stuck in her mane and couldn’t free herself. As the video shows, she tries hopping around on her remaining three legs to get unstuck and gallop away. Nothing she does seems to help—and meanwhile, her little foal stays close by her side to make sure she’s ok.
After a moment, the rescue team springs into action.
The rescuers in the video are the RSCPA, the largest animal welfare charity in the United Kingdom.
The two horses are clearly concerned by the presence of the strangers. To help out, the rescuers approach the pair very delicately and try to extricate the mother’s leg out of her mane. All the while, the foal does laps around its mother and the rescuers, forming a perimeter and doing whatever it can to help protect her. Even after the leg is free, it takes the mother a few moments to get back up again.
Finally, she is able to stumble to her feet and she and her foal set off into the distance!
This clip is heartwarming for many different reasons.
Fortunately for those two animals, the kind-hearted rescuers from the RSPCA were nearby and able to help out the day. Still, the foal is the one who really steals the show in this clip! Although he was surely very afraid of the entire situation, he showed true bravery by never leaving his mom’s side and waiting for help to come. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, the mother and the foal were ok.
