In spring 2018, rescuers with Los Angeles-based rescue organization Hope for Paws received a surprising text message from a local resident named Melany Gomez.
“I was hoping you can help my aunt,” the text said. “There’s a kitten stuck in her chimney in Whittier. Animal control has been there and they couldn’t do anything…. Hopefully we can save this lil guy before it’s too late.”
Melaney also told Hope for Paws that the kitten had been there for three days, and he hadn’t had any food or water. The kitten wasn’t going to be able to survive on his own for much longer.
After receiving the text, rescuers Eldad Hagar and Loreta rushed over to the house. With the homeowner’s permission, they climbed onto the roof and looked down into the chimney, trying to spot the cat. They couldn’t see him, so they attempted to use a camera to find the cat.
The kitten was wedged between the wall and the back of the fireplace. There was only one thing the rescuers could do to save him: they had to make a hole in one of the living room walls.
The homeowners, Jose and Jocelyn Pauscal, agreed to this plan—the two kindhearted people wanted to save this kitten more than anything. Eldad also promised them he would pay to replace the wall.
Eldad and Loreta examined the living room, and they decided to make the hole in a wall made of drywall. This would be the easiest wall for Jose and Jocelyn to replace.
Loreta and Eldad began drilling holes in the wall. They kept drilling until the hole was large enough to fit the kitten.
Finally, Eldad was able to reach through the wall and grab the kitten. For a heart-stopping moment, Eldad thought the kitten was dead. But then, to his relief, the kitten started meowing.
Eldad and Loreta gave the kitten some water, and then they rushed him to the vet for emergency care.
The veterinarians worked on the kitten all night, doing everything they could to keep him alive. The kitten was a fighter, and he made it through that first harrowing night.
As the days went on, the kitten got stronger and stronger. Soon, the kitten was playing and cuddling with his rescuers.
A few days later, Melany Gomez, the woman who texted Hope for Paws about the kitten, came to visit him.
She and her husband Mike quickly fell in love with the kitten, and they decided to adopt him. Melany named him Smokey as an homage to the chimney where he was found.
Melany and Mike also decided to adopt Tender, a kitten Hope for Paws had recently rescued from the highway. The couple took the kittens home, and they quickly settled into their new house.
Now, Tender and Smokey are as happy as can be. Both kittens are doing very well, and they’ve both recovered from their ordeals.
Melany started an Instagram page where she shares the kittens’ daily adventures. The kittens love playing with each other, and they also enjoy cuddling with Melany and Mike.
Hope for Paws did an amazing job looking after this little kitten, and thanks to them, this kitten has found a great forever home. If you want to see the amazing kitten rescue, check out the video below.
