The stories are animal rescues are always heartbreaking.
Then there are stories of animal rescues that are also heartbreaking but not because of any abuse but because of the dog and their human’s situation.
Hero lived with his homeless parent in California.
He was well-loved, but it’s hard to take care of yourself and a dog when you don’t have a home and no idea when your next meal is going to be.
That’s why Hero’s human eventually gave him up to a shelter, hoping a family will adopt Hero who can give him a great home.
Luckily, a foster parent was able to take in Hero until they found him his forever home.
They would eventually find his forever home in Canada. It turned out that the shelter system in California was overpopulated and a lot of the rescues found their way to Canada. Hero was one of them.
When Sarah and her husband took in Hero, they went for a little walk in their neighborhood. That was when Sarah knew she loved Hero and wanted to adopt him.
However, she needed it to be her husband’s idea so that they’ll both be on board.
So she asked her husband what he thought of Hero and if he wanted him to live with them. Her husband said, “I think he would probably be a good fit.”
Sarah couldn’t help herself and told her husband that she already loved Hero and wanted him so badly to live with them.
Well, her husband couldn’t help himself and said the same thing!
They knew already, during those first days, that they wanted Hero to be with them permanently. Hero loved them and wanted to live with them badly as well.
Hero loves to lie down on the couch with so many blankets wrapped around him. He loves to play with his human parents and loves them all day.
There is one thing Hero doesn’t like though: going outside.
Sarah believes it may have to do with his previous life. He lived with a homeless parent and they most likely spent most days moving from one spot to another and sleeping outside.
Sarah and her husband would encourage Hero to go outside. When they were outside, they’d try to get him to walk to the end of the driveway.
Even their neighbors have joined them in encouraging Hero to walk.
Her husband would sometimes pick up Hero and walk with Hero in his arms.
After a while, he’d put down Hero and Hero would be okay with walking at a different spot. When he gets tired though and when he thinks he’s done walking, Sarah’s husband will carry him all the way home.
When they get home, Hero goes back to his bed.
Hero is a very intuitive dog. He knows when his humans are down and needs comfort. One time, Sarah came home, devastated from work.
She was slumped on the floor and crying when Hero found her.
Hero went to the bathroom, took the mat, and gave it to Sarah.
Apparently, when Hero gets scared, he goes to the bathroom and lies down on the bath mat. That’s his safe place. He’s giving his safe place to his mom.
It’s been six years since they first met Hero and their life has never been the same since then.
