With Easter just passing a few weeks ago, many of us didn’t get a chance to see a huge, creepy bunny with a sweaty person inside! Well, in order for you to get your “Easter Bunny fix,” check out this cute and heartwarming story.
There is a rare disorder that sometimes causes bunnies to come out hairless!
The internet has recently been taken by storm with the incredible story of Mr. Bigglesworth. With a name like that, there is no wonder he is so famous right now. Part of what makes this bunny so popular is his appearance.
The recessive gene was present in his mom and dad.
A recessive gene needs another recessive partner to come to fruition. A common example you may know is blue eyes. Blue eyes are a recessive gene that can show up when two parents with the gene expression (even if they don’t have blue eyes) have a kid.
Mr. Bigglesworth has a story that connects with hearts.
A Rex rabbit breeder in Australia was welcoming a new batch of bunnies into his fold when he realized that one of them was different. Breeding bunnies for a profit, any defect that makes a rabbit “unsellable” results in euthanization. The hairless bunny was going to have a much shorter life than was expected.
Even if the hairless rabbit wasn’t euthanized, he wouldn’t have long to live.
While it may feel horrible to think that a baby rabbit would be put down, the lifespan for a Rex rabbit with this specific genetic disorder typically doesn’t exceed four weeks. This bunny had the odds stacked against it.
Cassandra was on Facebook one day looking at pictures.
Cassandra saw that a local breeder was selling some bunnies nearby. While she was looking at the uploaded pictures, she noticed that one of them said “hairless, not for sale” under it. This piqued her interest!
Messenging the breeder, she asked about the “special” bunny.
Having a rabbit of her own, Cassandra just wanted to know a bit more about the hairless bunny. The breeder sent her a bunch of photos of the funny little rabbit and told her:
She could have it ‘for free, as it wasn’t saleable’ and he put down the last one.
Driving to the farm the next day, Cassandra saw the bunny for the first time.
Separated from his siblings and quite frail, Cassandra fell for the little creature. She decided to take him home! At worst, she would have a little bunny that “reminded her of the hairless cat from the Austin Powers movies.”
Cassandra couldn’t find much on the internet about her new friend’s genetic condition.
Soon after posting on social media sites, she was messaged by people around the world who had similar experiences with their own hairless bunnies!
Four weeks later…
Mr. Bigglesworth is still alive and well! He is a happy and healthy little bunny who is quite different than most other rabbits in the world.
He strikes a chord with people who love an under(bunny?)dog story.
With such a great story, it is no wonder that the bunny is now famous. People seem to connect with the fact that Mr. Bigglesworth was an outcast who made it anyways. Cassandra wrote on her blog:
“Since Mr Bigglesworth is the epitome of the outcast, most people connect with his “underdog” story and adore him for his endearing qualities. His loyal followers embrace his physical differences, and have fallen in love with his cheekiness and connect to his message; that true beauty comes in all forms and radiates from within. The Mr Bigglesworth story is still unfolding and will hopefully continue for many more years.”
