Thanks to the kindness of a stranger, a blind Illinois raccoon was able to survive twice the lifespan he was expected to. That’s because Eryn would leave food outside of her home for this raccoon every single day.

And she did that for five years.

“There is something wrong with his tapetum lucidum,” Eryn wrote in a YouTube video caption. “His eyes shine bright green during the day. He is at least partially blind. He walks into things. He is afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow. “

Though the raccoon was disabled, he was able to survive because of Eryn’s charity.

“He is out and about during the day. He comes to our house for food early in the morning usually around 6-9AM,” Eryn wrote. “He often returns for seconds and sometimes comes back for thirds. His bottom lip is missing so we feed him soft pasta noodles soaked in cream of chicken soup. We often cut up small pieces of hot dogs, ham, pork, etc. He refuses to eat canned cat/dog food.”

At first, Eryn thought that he might have rabies.

Or maybe distemper. But eventually, she ruled those out. She figured that he would have already died if he had either of those illnesses and she’s been feeding this guy for five years.

However, one day, Eryn found that he had some new helpers to give him a hand. Two tiny black kittens that Eryn referred to as his “bodyguards.”

Eryn figured out that the kitten worked out a deal with the raccoon. The cats would help guide the blind raccoon around and the raccoon would show the cats where he got food from.

“They would magically appear when he would come for food. So they figured out that Blind Raccoon = FOOD,” Eryn observed. “So they would appear when the Blind Raccoon (and sometimes other raccoons) would show up.”

The day, unfortunately, came when the raccoon passed away.

He apparently had a pretty good run because raccoons usually only live about two years. It must have been all that yummy food and love that Eryn was giving him.

But Eryn wasn’t the only one who was sad to see her raccoon friend go. Apparently, the cats were too and needed someone else to partner with now that the raccoon was gone.

Eryn had the perfect solution and decided to adopt them. Now they are one big happy family and will never forget the blind raccoon that brought them all together.
