A woman was viciously attacked by a wandering fox in her own home.

Sherri Russo, a retired nurse living in Caroline, New York, was talking on her phone in her front yard when she was attacked by a grey fox.

“When I got the first nip on the outside of my leg, I actually thought it was our neighbor’s dog,” Sherri said. “I lifted my leg and was getting ready to say ‘hey, what are you doing?’ and shoo him away, but I looked down, and I saw this grey fox.”

And the fox was relentless! It was as if he picked Sherri among all the people he saw to feast on.

When Sherri brushed the fox aside, he came back with a vengeance and bit Sherri’s hand instead.

“He was a little guy, but he was just relentless, he just kept coming back and each time he did I started to lose a little more confidence in my ability to ward him off,” Sherri recalled.

Something bad was going to happen. Will Sherri be able to finally fight him off?

“When I reached down to grab him off my leg and yank him away, that’s when he took a hold of between my thumb and my forefinger, and he just chomped down on me,” Sherri added.

The two of them thrashed around her yard and she was screaming because of the attack.

Luckily, her screams alerted her neighbor. She had kicked the fox when her neighbor rushed up to her with a big stick to drive away the fox.

It worked!

The fox ran off. Maybe he decided to just attack someone else. Meanwhile, Sherri is just grateful the fox has finally left and it’s thanks to her neighbor.

“I just thank God that my neighbor turned up. I can’t get over how kind it was for him to not look the other way or pretend he didn’t hear anything. I’ll be forever grateful for that,” Sherri shared.

The video was first posted online by Sherri’s cousin, Ed, on Twitter, who was shocked by this rabid encounter.

“A cousin of mine was attacked by a rabid fox in Ithaca, NY. She’s OK. But geez this video is crazy!” Ed wrote on Twitter.

Her husband, Paul, used this attack as an opportunity to bring awareness to everyone’s safety from rabid animals.

“My wife was attacked by a rabid fox this past July. Our friend edited the security camera footage and made this educational video for us to post to alert everyone that this can happen to anyone,” Paul wrote on his Facebook profile.

It’s definitely an incident where people believe it will only happen to other people and not to them.

They later learned that the fox attacked another person not too far away and was killed. When they examined the fox, it tested positive for rabies.

Sherri was informed but she had already been receiving treatment, rabies vaccine, and medication for the injuries she sustained during the attack.
