One spring, a wild rabbit and a domesticated rabbit decided to stage a bunny version of “Romeo and Juliet.”
The domesticated rabbit’s owner shared footage of the star-crossed lovers on YouTube. It quickly went viral, receiving over two million views. Clearly, everyone enjoys a good rabbit love story!
The video begins by showing the domesticated rabbit, Pep, sitting next to the screen door, enjoying the warm spring weather. It was mating season, and the wild rabbits were chasing each other around outside. But then, the wild rabbit noticed Pep gazing out the door. He ran up to her, curious. He jumped up against the screen door, looking at Pep.
After a few minutes, Pep decided that she didn’t like all this attention, and so she ran into her cardboard box.
Then, Pep decided that she was interested in this wild rabbit after all, and she ran back up to the screen door.
The wild rabbit put his paws against the glass door, excited to see Pep again. The two began sniffing each other through the door.
Pep’s owner decided not to open the door, which was a good idea—wild and domesticated rabbits in the U.S. can’t successfully reproduce because their genetics are too different. Still, the wild rabbit stood and waited for a few minutes, wondering if Pep would come outside.
When it became clear that she wasn’t coming out, the wild rabbit ran off, joining the rest of the rabbits running through the backyard. Before he left, he and Pep nuzzled through the screen door one last time.
In the YouTube comments, people expressed sympathy for the lovelorn rabbit.
People also imagined what the wild rabbit would tell his friends about Pep.
Pep and the wild rabbit may not be destined to be together, but they had a nice, brief time together. If you want to see the whole rabbit courtship, check out the video below. This six-minute rabbit love story is sure to put a smile on your face!
