When you think of cute animals, what’s the first animal that comes to mind? You may think of an adorable dog or a kitty with big eyes. Or, you may imagine a wild animal, like a koala or a bunny.
But we think there’s an argument to be made for the quokka being the absolute cutest animal in the world.
If you met a quokka on the side of the road, would you know it was a quokka?
If you’re not an Australian native or zoologist, this may be the first time you’ve even heard of the existence of quokkas.
Quokkas have the tail and stature of a giant rat, the fur of a squirrel, and the face shape of a bear emoji. Their size ranges from a rabbit to a cat. According to CBC Kids, they are the distant cousins of kangaroos.
In Rottnest, Australia, 21-year-old Campbell Jones, and his girlfriend were out for a nice bike ride.
Reported by Bored Panda, as Jones was walking back to his bike after a quick break, a quokka randomly started to chase after him. After catching up to Jones, the quokka jumped at him.
This chasing and jumping scenario could have either played out to be adorable or extremely terrifying (if you don’t know what it is, it probably would have been terrifying). Thankfully, it was adorable.
Jones and the Quokka shared some darling selfies and moments together.
Since quokkas don’t have many natural predators, they are less fearful around other animals and people. They’ll just walk straight up to people for a hug or a little smooch!
These fuzzy creatures, with their constant resting smiling face, are extremely friendly and are not afraid of humans.
In fact, in Rottnest Island, they are known to come right up to people or visit local cafes to ask for food. Reported by CBC Kids, there are rules against feeding quokkas human food because the best diet for them consists of plants.

It’s probably quite hard not to feed these adorable bear-faced quokkas human food. After all, how could you say no to this cute face?
Jones shared photos of his quokka encounter on Instagram, and they quickly went viral.
Everyone loved the adorable snaps, and Jones was even interested by the Western Australian about his encounter.
“As I walked back to my bike, the quokka chased after me,” Jones told the West Australian.”I put down the GoPro and it jumped at me as if to say, ‘Come back.'”
Jones now shares even more photos of quokkas on his Instagram page, As Happy as a Quokka. He says his goal with his page is to simply make everyone as happy as a quokka!
