British Columbia is home to different species of bears. Approximately, there are around 15,000 Grizzly bears there. You can also find a lot of Black Bears and even the Spirit Bear.
David Jonsson and his family didn’t expect to see one in their yard one day.
The bear was chilling near one of the trees in their property in Coquitlam in British Columbia. The first one to spot it was Jersey, a small Jack Russell Terrier.
Knowing that the bear was intruding on their property, the fearless dog didn’t leave the area. Instead of running away, he remained close to the bear. He was probably trying to understand why it was in their yard.
Then, Jersey started barking furiously.
This startled the big animal in an instant. It backed away for a bit but didn’t leave the area. That’s when Jersey decided to launch another onslaught of barks and growls.
The dog’s attack worked.
It sent the bear scampering back up the tree. Nervously, it tried to hold on but Jersey’s barks were too frightening. Plus, his family members were also there. They were banging pots and pans, hoping to scare the big bear away with the noise.
The bear surrendered.
It tried to escape the yard but the brave dog wouldn’t let him alone. He was literally at the bear’s heels, pursuing him with all his might.
Despite Jersey’s small size, he was able to send the bear stumbling and scrambling into the woods. This made the family, particularly the kids, squealing in excitement.
Jersey, the fearless dog, saved the day!
His bravery earned him a lot of praise.
One Facebook user commented:
“That’s a jack russell! They’re not scared of the devil!”
Another one said:
“This is what little things can do, dont underestimate little people.”
Someone also commented:
“I bet that little puppy felt like a Great Dane. This is so cute.”
Unfortunately, not everyone who was able to watch the video found it amusing. A lot of people expressed concern about the dog’s safety.
One of them said:
“All the kids seemed happy to see the dog chase the bear away but if the bear would have destroyed the little dog and shredded it to pieces those kids would have been devastated for life.”
Another one commented:
“I’m bothered that they did not call that dog off. They are lucky that bear didn’t swat that little dog dead.”
Despite the different opinions on the video, one thing remains true.
In the eyes of the kids and the entire family, Jersey is a hero. He courageously drove the bear away to protect their property despite his small size.
What to do in a bear encounter with your dog
Ideally, you shouldn’t leave your dog outside unattended, particularly if you know that bears are quite common in the area you live in. Even if you have a large dog, it still might not be enough to defend itself against an agitated bear.
If possible, put bells on your dog’s collar. The sound of the bells should help scare bears away. Additionally, it’s also a good idea to make noises. You can bang pots and pans, just like what the family did to help Jersey.
