In the most time-critical of situations, when another living being’s life is in danger, we all hope we could play the hero and stage an impressive rescue.
It’s not just humans who find themselves in trouble. Animals, too, often end up in situations that are impossible for them to get out of.
The biggest animal-lovers out there could never ignore an animal in distress, like this drowning puppy.
The pup had somehow got into a fast-flowing Romanian river, and, no matter how hard he was trying, he couldn’t climb out onto dry land.
He was attempting to scale a steep stone incline, and it was impossible for him to do it on his four spindly legs.
It wouldn’t be long before exhaustion would kick in, and the pup would no longer be able to continue his attempts to save himself.
Two fishermen working in the river knew they had to step in and save the pup before that moment happened.
The dog could be heard whining as he tried unsuccessfully to climb out of the water. Luckily, his rescuers weren’t far away.
Off camera, one of the men took his shoes off, climbed into the cold waters, and lured the canine towards a concrete platform.
When the footage starts up again, we see him standing with a dog on a high ledge, preparing to go back into the water.
He climbs into the water, then carefully picks up the pup by his collar, lowering him into the water.
It may look like a fairly strange way to carry the dog, but it’s actually exactly how you’re meant to carry a rescued animal.
Holding a dog by the scruff of the neck, while potentially uncomfortable for the pup, encourages him to go limp and not resist, as his mother would have carried him the same when he was a baby.
The last thing the man would have wanted is for the dog to panic and fall back into the river, where he could get swept away with no chance of further rescue.
The man wades across the river, then passes the dog to his friend on the shore.
This second man carries the dog up to high ground, where he finally must know that he’s safe.
Instantly, the pup starts bounding around, wagging his tail and whining. He’s moving so quickly that his rescuers can’t even get him still enough for a friendly fuss!
This dog clearly knows he’s just escaped a life-or-death situation.
But more than that, he quite clearly wants to be best friends with his rescuers. We’d love to know if there was a happy outcome of this story? Perhaps the pup was adopted by one of the fishermen.
The video was shared by Romanian news outlet Dejeanul, before it spread across YouTube and captured the hearts of thousands of people. People were quick to praise the fishermen for their rescue, with one person writing:
“Thank you so much to the person who saved that dog… Really Humanity is still alive💗”
Someone else commented:
“That small act of kindness changes someone’s life. Especially for those poor souls who cannot express their pain and struggles.”
It’s true – unfortunately, not everyone would have climbed into freezing waters to rescue a dog, but these two men didn’t think twice.
They showed bravery and determination where other people would have simply turned their heads away.
