It can be truly deplorable what some people are capable of doing, and one of those truly horrific moments was captured on camera when a box of puppies was marked with ‘shoot me’ written on the side.
A man and woman were taking a walk in the woods of Texas when they stumbled upon a closed box marked ‘shoot me.’ Inside, they found 6 hungry puppies, and they knew they needed to get them to a shelter as soon as possible. They eventually got a hold of Karen Rene’e at The Underground Project, a volunteer organization that provides aid to strays.
It’s a good thing they managed to get help on time- the dogs were only a month old but in serious need of medical help. Besides being malnourished, “one had an infected bite on her face, while another’s tail had been bitten almost all the way through.”
With all that they’ve been through, the dogs have been given names to reflect their strong nature- Aries, Apollo, Aphrodite, Athena, Atlas, and Hera.
Despite showing initial signs of improvement, Athena, Aphrodite, and Aries suffered coccidia infections and Athena and Aphrodite eventually passed away. Rene’e promised to protect the others as much as possible, and the other siblings managed to grow healthy and strong.
They also began to bond with Rene’e’s daughter, Blakeleigh, who suffers from multiple sclerosis and is blind.
They’re currently now looking for permanent homes for their furry family members, as they can’t keep them all, and they need to bring in other helpless dogs into their foster home. She’s glad they’re stronger and happier than ever, and she’s sure they will find great places to spend the rest of their life!
