It’s a common expression that not all heroes wear capes or uniforms, as is certainly the case with Glen Venezio from Puerto Rico, where he is known as the ‘Catman’.
Glen realized that stray cats that were living on the streets constantly had to worry about food or water and were plain suffering. Over ten years ago, he decided to do something about it.
It started by just feeding a single cat, but that number quickly grew. As of right now, Glen takes care of over 250 street cats in the San Juan neighborhood in Puerto Rico and covers a whopping ten-block radius. Unfortunately, the neighborhood is rather known for its high criminality and animal cruelty.
Every night, Glen feeds cats for about five hours. In the ten years that he’s been doing this, he hasn’t stopped a single day. Rain, snow, storms – nothing can stop ‘Catman’ from achieving his goal to keep the stray cats happy and nurtured. He never missed a single night.
He uses a shopping cart to get around and spends about $60 per day to buy water and food for the cats. This means that Glen already spent over $219,000 on his noble cause, not counting inflation, and with a minimum of donations coming in from other people.
The animal hero is originally from the New Jersey and New York City, but has been living in Puerto Rico since 2006. Approximately one million cats and dogs live on the streets of the island.
Glen regularly gets threatened, but can luckily count on the help of befriended police officer Wilfredo if anything goes wrong. Aside from his nightly activities, Glen also helps around on the animal with a number of animal activists, aids the police with cases regarding animal cruelty and has even successfully led protests against a planned monkey farm.
‘Catman’ is a man with his heart at the right place.
