When a woman came across two pygmy goats who had somehow stumbled into her garage, she immediately called the local police to see if they could help. The two goats had made their way through all of the cat food the woman had set out earlier, and she was worried they may find their way into something else if somebody did not come to help soon.
Sergeant Daniel Fitzpatrick of the Belfast Police Department immediately responded to the scene in an attempt to help the woman with her newfound goat problem. Surprisingly enough, the Belford Police Department doubles as a sort of local animal control if no other personnel are available to help. For this reason, Sergeant Fitzpatrick was prepared for the worst as he approached the woman’s house.
“The woman who called had found them on High Street, and had somehow gotten them corralled into her garage, and she closed the garage door. She called the police department because we act as the animal control officers in Belfast,” said Sergeant Fitzpatrick.
After Sergeant Fitzpatrick was filled in on the situation at hand, he hatched a plan to safely remove the goats from the garage without agitating them. Worried the goats may resist and fight back if they were not careful, Sergeant Fitzpatrick approached the scene with caution.
“She led us right to the garage, and when we looked out through the door, I saw two small goats jumping from one spot to another on a cat entertainment center, eating cat food,” he explained.
To his surprise, the goats did not hassle him at all. In fact, they were immediately cooperative and followed him right to his car where he directed them to hop into the back seats. Although the goats were now moved to a safe space, Sergeant Fitzpatrick’s next mission was to determine where they came from so they could get back home.
“I thought it was a good idea to open up the sliding Plexiglas divider that separates the officer area from the area where we put people who are in custody. I’d been feeding them little slivers of carrots throughout the day to kind of tide them over, and at one point, Louis kind of nuzzled my ear — he’d put his head through, and was trying to get my attention. I thought it was probably to get some more carrots, so I had to pull over and pass more carrots back to him, and off we went again,” he said.
During the search for the owners of these two goats, Sergeant Fitzpatrick developed a fondness for the gentle animals. He eventually discovered the goats belonged to the neighbors of the woman who found them, and was able to bring them back to their home safe and sound.
