Eva’s family was in a world of angst.
Their dog, a brand new momma, had run away and they could not find her.
She had a big litter.
She had just given birth to eight new puppies ten days prior and her babies needed her.
Eva had brought the dog outside and she had gotten out of the yard.
She had never run away before and they feared something would happen to her.
Searching in the dark.
They drove around looking for her but since the dog disappeared in the evening, they were having trouble finding her on the dark roads.
They decided to post about the missing dog on their social media accounts to help them find her.
Meanwhile, Officer Stefany Jones of the Grandview Police Department received a call from dispatch that a dog may have been hit by a car.
She and her partner were on the lookout during their patrol for the dog.
Then, they found her.
With the help of their spotlight, they discovered the dog lying on the side of the access road off I-49.
They actually drove past the dog and almost missed her because she was laying motionless on the road. But when they approached her, she moved her head slightly and they knew she still had a chance.
Usually, in situations like this, they’ll wait for Animal Control to take care of the animals.
“Since we were so close to Crest Animal Hospital, we decided to just load her up and get her down there,” Officer Jones told FOX4 News.
The other police officer, Officer Griffin, learned about her puppies, who couldn’t eat without their mother.
He took action.
He went out of his way to make sure they were provided for while their mom is in the hospital.
He stopped by a local Walmart to buy milk replacement packs for the puppies and dropped them off at the house.
“He made sure that they were fed before he left. He didn’t just drop them off. He came and fed the puppies,” Eva shared.
Unfortunately, Eva and her family had to bring their dog home earlier than they should have because of the unexpected cost.
Boarding is $100 a night.
The accident gave the dog a broken pelvis and developed liquid in her lungs and surgery would cost at least $4,000.
They’re hoping to raise the money so that their dog can receive the medical care she needs.
In the meantime, at least she is present again for her puppies, who need her.
What do you do in case you do hit an animal on the road?
Stop your car.
Check on the animal to see if the animal is still alive. Check on the animal only if you believe the area is safe.
If you can check the animal, especially for animal companions, check to see if they have ID tags and contact the owner.
After you’ve contacted the owner, contact the police or animal control so they can take the animal to the right treatment facility.
