Police deputy Todd Frazier from Mississipi was inches away from death when he was ambushed by three gang members. The criminals were about to violently kill the police officer, but then his K9 partner Lucas intervened and saved his life.

Deputy Frazier was simply driving on a somewhat lonely highway in Pearlington when he suddenly spotted a blue car. The driver of the car seemed unresponsive, so the police officer decided to take a look.

It turns out that the unconscious driver was just a distraction.

Two other men then quickly approached him and the police officer knew that he was being ambushed. Even though he valiantly fought back, the man was overpowered by the trio of gangsters after he fell to the ground.

The criminals then dragged Deputy Frazier into the woods and threatened multiple times to eliminate him.

“The deputy tripped and fell to the ground as he was backing away from the vehicle,” chief investigator Glenn Grannan said to CNN. “That’s when all three male subjects, including the driver, ambushed him, cut him on the forehead with a sharp object and dragged him into the woods.”

However, the police officer did one small thing that would end up saving his life.

He opened the back door of the police car thanks to a remote control around the man’s neck. Todd’s backup partner was waiting to intervene.

Within seconds, his six-year-old K9 partner Lucas jumped out of the car and ran straight towards the criminals to protect his owner and handler.

The Belgian Malinois then successfully bit one of the three men. The gang members all fled the scene shortly after.

Unfortunately, Deputy Fraizer did suffer from a couple of knife wounds because of the ambush, but he fully recovered. Lucas came out of the altercation without severe injuries, although he did need some dental work to fix his damaged teeth.

The police officer still doesn’t know why he was attacked but thinks it’s because he wore a police uniform. Unfortunately, the suspects still haven’t been found and apprehended yet.

After the attack, Deputy Fraizer and partner Lucas were invited at a “Dog Days of Summer” children’s camp organized by the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League.

The organization presented Lucas with a Hero of the Year Award, and he previously received the Heroic Dog Award from PETA too.

“I had three people on me and I’m not a very big man, and they basically whipped my butt,” the police officer recalls. “And luckily thank God I had Lucas here, and I had a button on my belt that I wear, and when I hit the button Lucas jumped out of the car and attacked all three of them and they ran away. That’s why he’s my hero.”

Deputy Frazier knew from the moment he hit his remote control button that Lucas would make the save and protect his owner.

“He knew. I could hear him coming. I couldn’t see anything because the blood was all in my eyes, but I could hear him coming, growling and making these sounds… he sounded like a wolf,” he said. “I thought, ‘Now he’s gonna get you.'”

The man can’t praise his four-footer partner enough and says that if the roles were reversed, he would happily look out for him as well.

“He’s multi-talented. He can do a lot of things.”

“He would put his life on the line for me,” the man told. “He is a deputy. I would die for him too.”
