A lot of people are scared of spiders. They hate the eyes, the legs, and the webs. If you hate spiders or have a fear of them, you might not want to watch this video. It shows a police officer making a normal traffic stop when his dash cam catches something creepy.
At the corner of the screen, you can see a large spider.
It appears to be scurrying down the street. It looks larger than any spider should be, roughly the size of a large dog. It’s terrifying. When the Fulshear Police Department staff spotted it, they had to share the video online.
Staff posted it with the caption:
“Who needs Hollywood special effects? This little guy was positioned perfectly on the windshield of the patrol car and gave our clerk, who was reviewing the video, quite the ‘Halloween scare.'”
Of course, everyone had their own opinion about the spider.
Some people thought it was real, but most were quick to call it out as a fake. They also all had their own opinions about what the spider really could be or why it looked so big.
Some people said it was a computer-generated image.
Michael Brotherton said:
“Fake!! That spider is on a flat horizontal surface!! If it was on the windshield you’d see the underside of the spider!!”
Another user said that the spider was real but wasn’t as big as it appeared.
She believed it was on the window near the camera, which is why it looks so big.
Lucille Allen said:
“I can tell its a dashcam camera, and I can tell its on the windshield, if u look closely u could see it too, and because the spider is so close to the dashcam, it looks bigger than it is., I can also tell there’s a distance between the officer and spider, yes it crawled toward him as it appears, but it was actually crawling across the windshield in the same direction the officer is standing.”
The police department got so many comments from people asking if it was real and saying how they felt tricked that the staff had to comment with a disclaimer. They posted:
“We never said it was real. It was at best, an optical illusion. The spider was walking on the windshield during the traffic stop making it appear to be a large spider walking on the road.”
While this spider might not be real, it’s definitely a funny Halloween trick.
It also makes you wonder if there are any giant spiders out there. Just because we haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they don’t exist. There are some pretty big spiders that exist in real life.
According to National Geographic, the biggest spider in the world is the Goliath birdeater tarantula, which lives in South America.
This spider can grow to be 4.75 inches with a leg span of up to 11 inches. These spiders don’t normally walk down the street, though. Instead, they live in the rainforest regions of northern South America, including northern Brazil, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname.
According to the Smithsonian, it takes a while for these spiders to get to their full size. The website says:
“In order to grow, they must go through several molts. Molting is the process by which the tarantula sheds its old exoskeleton and emerges in a new, larger one. Spiderlings can be expected to molt five or six times in their first year. They take around two to three years to reach maturity.”
If you aren’t already having nightmares about these giant spiders, you may when you find out they are usually active at night.
They prefer to hunt for their prey in the dark, and most of them hide and sleep during the day.
Don’t worry, though; they don’t eat people. They normally eat invertebrates, mice, frogs, lizards, and birds. If you have a small dog or cat, though, the spider may be able to make a meal out of them. At least you don’t have to worry about running into one on the way home from work.
