It’s a shame that some dog breeds are so misunderstood. In particular, this applies to Pitbulls. We’ve all heard horror stories about how unpredictable and vicious these dogs are. In truth, when raised by responsible owners, they make excellent pets. They especially bond with kids.

The Pitbull breed has a lot of intuition. It seems to immediately know who to trust and who to fear. As one dog proved, she was so scared after being rescued that she would only sit in the corner of her kennel. She was so depressed the shelter workers weren’t sure what to do to help her.

Her name is Nala

This sweet pup didn’t have a very good start to live from what it appears. She was found roaming the streets in New Zealand. Some kind person picked her up and brought her to a nearby shelter. But she was terrified. For several days, the shelter’s owner, Abbie Van Der Plax, sat on the floor with her, desperately trying to earn her trust.

All she would do is shake and growl

Those two responses can mean one of two things. Either this Pitbull wasn’t friendly or she was extremely scared. In Nala’s case, it was the latter. The staff at the shelter tried everything possible to get her to move but the only thing she wanted to do was lay on her blanket.

But then something miraculous happened

The staff had no idea what to do to coax Nala to move. Then one day, the owner brought her seven-year-old son to work with her. Almost immediately, Zach made a connection, something no one else had succeed at doing. Her entire personality changed…for the better.

No one could believe what they were seeing.

As Zach sat in front of Nala’s kennel, she crept toward him. It was clear she still felt afraid but this was a huge turnaround from how she’d acted previously. That’s when she started showing signs of submission. Sitting quietly, Nala would stretch her body while never taking her eyes off the boy.

With every passing second, she became increasingly more confident

Nala walked toward the front of the kennel, sticking her nose out so she could get a better smell of Zach. These two had bonded. For whatever reason, she accepted Zach as her human. Perhaps the family that lost or abandoned her had a young son as well. But we’ll never know.

We love happy endings

Considering the connection made between Nala and Zach, the shelter owner decided to adopt her. Now as the boy sits on the couch, she walks over to him with her ears perked up and her tail wagging. She’s even great with a younger son in the house. They’ve taught her several tricks, which she obediently responds to.

This story began with a depressed dog that growled and shook from pure fear. Today, she’s turned into a loving, patient, and gentle pet. She and Zach have something very special. Not only does she follow him wherever he goes but she also takes turns sleeping in the two boys’ beds at night. Finally, she feels safe. This just goes to show that people shouldn’t assume this breed is dangerous.
