This nearly broke my heart. 🥺

Sharing a bond with someone is a special thing.

It’s something that doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it can last a lifetime.

But pair bonding isn’t something that’s specific to humans.

Animals are known to build strong bonds with each other as well.

By far, the most common animal bond that we see is between two dogs.

Dogs can create bonds that are so strong, even being in separate rooms can cause them serious amounts of stress.

This was the case for one bonded dog-pair at a rescue shelter in San Fransico, California.

The name of the shelter is Rocket Dog, and they focus their efforts on helping abandoned dogs find homes rather than be put down.

The organization claims that their ultimate goal, “is to create a world where all companion animals have loving and permanent homes and where no good natured dogs, no matter what their age, are killed in shelters because they are considered to be surplus or un-adoptable.”

When a three-year-old pit bull named Merrill and an eight-year-old chihuahua named Taco arrived at Rocket Dog shelter, the staff had no idea how closely bonded the two dogs were.

They quickly discovered that when Merrill and Taco were separated, the two of them would cry until they were reunited again.

This proved to be problematic when Merrill had to go into surgery and be separated from Taco for quite some time.

Taco was restless and crying until Merrill was finally released from surgery, but the staff at Rocket Dog tried to keep the two dogs separated so that Merrill could heal.

However, it soon became clear that both dogs just wanted to be together.

Taco was gentle and attentive to Merrill while she healed from her surgery.

The shelter put the two dogs’ profiles online to try and get them adopted.

However, knowing how hard it is for two dogs to get adopted at once, the shelter listed the pair separately.

One day, a man saw Merrill’s profile and came for a visit.

He fell in love with her and decide to adopt her right then and there.

But then the man ran into a problem.

As he tried to leave with Merrill, she stared howling and wouldn’t stop.

The staff then told the man about Merill and Taco’s tight bond.

He understood, but was, unfortunately, unable to adopt both of the dogs and had to choose a different dog to bring home.

After this happened, the shelter decided that they should go ahead and list the two dogs on the same profile, hoping that one person would adopt both dogs together.

After some time, a family saw Merrill and Taco’s story online and fell in love with the bond that these two dogs share.

They came by the shelter, met the pair, and decide to adopt them both.

Merrill and Taco now live together in a home with a family that loves them.
