The courageous pit bull ‘Buddy’ is now being praised as a hero after saving a nine-year-old boy from drowning in the Murray River nearby Moama, Australia. Buddy was minding his own business when he suddenly noticed a little boy in distress. In what can only be described as a horrendous act, a 27-year-old woman allegedly tried to murder her 5-year-old and 9-year-old son by drowning them.
Buddy immediately intervened and attempted to save the children from their mother.
He noticed the older son struggling in the water and brought him to safety by biting him and dragging him away from the woman. Buddy’s brave intervention saved the little boy’s life, but he was unable to rescue his younger brother as well. The pit bull then assaulted the woman after she tried to go after him.
Police officers and emergency services arrived shortly after to arrest the woman and treat the 9-year-old’s bite wound. The body of his younger brother was later found in the river.
Buddy was seized by Murray River Council Rangers and remained in their custody during their investigation. The Rangers needed to make sure that Buddy wasn’t a dangerous animal, even though he only bit the boy because he tried to save his life.
After hearing the news, Buddy’s owners launched an online petition that amassed over 50,000 signatures.
“Buddy the dog has reacted and attempted to save the boys in doing so he has bit the eldest boy in his rescue attempts, unfortunately, he was unable to save the youngest boy and has also bit the mother,” the owners wrote.
“Buddy is a member of our family and has grown up around children his whole life and has been the most gentlest dog, he has clearly seen a child in distress and attempted to help.”
Grandfather of the two boys stated in an interview with The Courier-Mail that he knows that the dog was just trying to help.
“I own a similar dog and I know he was trying to save the boys, it’s their nature when they are raised with kids,” he said to The Courier Mail. “Let the ones who his actions affected decide. I have one grandson left because this brave dog took action as required.”
Luckily, authorities have decided not to put Buddy down for his actions and returned the pit bull to his owners. The police officers have stated that Buddy “was acting in reasonable defense of the nine-year-old boy.”
“I just want to tell everyone that our boy buddy is coming home,” his owners wrote on the online petition page after the decision was made. “We all can’t thank [you] enough for all [your] support in sharing and help.”
A tragic story that could have ended a lot worse if Buddy didn’t intervene.
