“They’re very happy-go-lucky, which is amazing coming from the situation where they came from,” Friedman remarks, highlighting the remarkable transformation of these animals.
Despite their newfound happiness, there are still signs of the trauma they’ve experienced.

Accustomed to starvation, they eat as if unsure of when their next meal will come, a behavior that hints at their previous life of neglect.

Discovered by Southern NY Pig Rescue, the pigs were in a critical state – emaciated, terrified, and deprived of fresh water for days.
Their condition was a clear indication of the severe neglect they had suffered.

They were found in a tiny stall, almost drowning in mucky, muddy water.
To avoid drowning, they had to sleep on each other’s backs, a desperate measure for survival.
Their rescue was initiated by a concerned neighbor who noticed their plight.
Despite reassurances from the original owner, it was clear that the pigs were suffering.
The neighbor contacted the SPCA, which in turn reached out to the Southern NY Pig Rescue service.
This intervention marked the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of these pigs.
October marked a significant turning point for Katniss, Rue, and Prim as they arrived at Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary.
This new home was a world apart from the horrors they had known.
Over the months, they transformed from timid creatures into friendly pets, a change that Friedman describes vividly: “They were definitely standoffish… but they were not understanding a pet or a scratch or a belly rub.”
Now, they are among the favorites at the sanctuary, often following Friedman around, showcasing their affection and trust.
