Fans of the heartwarming movie “Babe” might find themselves deeply moved by the real-life story of Katniss, Rue, and Prim.

These three pigs, now residing at Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary, are living a life that’s a stark contrast to their past.

They spend their days enjoying treats like pumpkins, peanuts, and grains, a far cry from the dire conditions they once endured.

The sanctuary, founded by Todd Friedman, provides these pigs not just with food, but also with abundant human affection.

Visitors often engage with them, offering pets and rubs.

“They’re very happy-go-lucky, which is amazing coming from the situation where they came from,” Friedman remarks, highlighting the remarkable transformation of these animals.

Despite their newfound happiness, there are still signs of the trauma they’ve experienced.

Their eating habits, for instance, reflect their past struggles.

Accustomed to starvation, they eat as if unsure of when their next meal will come, a behavior that hints at their previous life of neglect.

The story of their rescue is both harrowing and inspiring.

Discovered by Southern NY Pig Rescue, the pigs were in a critical state – emaciated, terrified, and deprived of fresh water for days.

Their condition was a clear indication of the severe neglect they had suffered.

The extent of their mistreatment was evident in their living conditions.

They were found in a tiny stall, almost drowning in mucky, muddy water.

To avoid drowning, they had to sleep on each other’s backs, a desperate measure for survival.

Their rescue was initiated by a concerned neighbor who noticed their plight.

Despite reassurances from the original owner, it was clear that the pigs were suffering.

The neighbor contacted the SPCA, which in turn reached out to the Southern NY Pig Rescue service.

This intervention marked the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of these pigs.

October marked a significant turning point for Katniss, Rue, and Prim as they arrived at Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary.

This new home was a world apart from the horrors they had known.

Over the months, they transformed from timid creatures into friendly pets, a change that Friedman describes vividly: “They were definitely standoffish… but they were not understanding a pet or a scratch or a belly rub.”

Now, they are among the favorites at the sanctuary, often following Friedman around, showcasing their affection and trust.

Friedman, who has been volunteering for animal welfare organizations for years, decided in 2018 to purchase a farm and transform it into a sanctuary.

The first animal he rescued was Arthur, found abandoned on the farm. Since then, Arthur has been joined by Katniss, Rue, Prim, and many others.

The sanctuary, located in Parksville, New York, is set to open to the public in spring 2019. Those wishing to support this noble cause can make donations online.
