If you’re lucky enough to be the proud owner of a pet, it’s likely you’ve got a trove of photographic evidence of it. It comes quite naturally – you see them do something cute, funny, or memorable and it seems silly not to take a picture and savor the moment.
Unfortunately, many of us are probably guilty of having a few lacking in quality. Maybe it’s a bit blurry, out of focus, poorly framed? It’s certainly not easy photographing an energetic pup – especially when these moments are often so fleeting.
It’s important to remember that quality is better than quantity and capturing special moments that you can cherish forever is something that takes the right equipment and a keen eye. Just ask the panel of photographers specializing in pet photography.
Robert Bahou
Robert Bahou has captured a series titled ‘Animal Soul’. It looks at what’s beneath the adorable fur and focuses on pet’s gazes.
“I’ve avoided all distraction by limiting the photographs to medium shots with a black background, and I have purposely avoided humor as a selling point.”
“I want people to look at animals in a way that they don’t normally do. I want to show the animals they’re so familiar with in a way they haven’t seen them before.” With these minimalist shots, the personalities and unique traits of the pets come through more clearly.
Seth Casteel
It’s likely you’ve seen Seth Casteel’s work and not realized. This talented photographer is responsible for the ‘Underwater Dogs’ series that gained him fame and praise from fans and critics alike. Seth’s pet photography is all about capturing playfulness and energy.
Since then he has created a new series with puppies and kittens and the results are awesome!
Sophie Gamand
Sophie Gamand photographs pets in a manner that is both poignant and playful – mixing portraits with playful costuming. Her series ‘Wet Dog’ showcases wet pups as they are being washing during their grooming sessions with silly hairstyles. “They are more than animals, they are life companions. So when I photograph dogs, I look for the human in them: an expression, the life in their eyes, a smile,” she says.
Another important and moving series she’s worked on is titled ‘Flower Power: Pit Bulls of the Revolution.’ Here she fights negative stereotypes of Pit Bulls by showing them in in a softer light – adorned in flowers.“The flowers symbolize the ephemeral quality of life, reminding us that these creatures are fragile and precious,” she explains.
