It is fun living with a pet parrot. They are smart and silly creatures that can easily learn tricks once you teach them. Just initiate a conversation with your pet parrot and your home will never be boring. Plus, they could put a huge smile on your face whenever you are feeling down.
These clever birds aren’t just for show with their talkative beaks and party tricks. In exchange for a tasty treat, you could teach them how to interact with conversational AIs like Google Home or Amazon Alexa. You could just sit back and relax with your parrot asking Alexa to play “Despacito” for you. Who knows that parrots and these AIs could get along so well?
Petra can manipulate the lights in her living room with ease.
Here is Petra, an African Grey parrot who can dim or brighten up a room using simple command lines like “All lights on/off” with Alexa. Her owner said that she first learned these commands just four days after being in the same room with an Alexa.
Petra also learned to ask about random facts and facts about her species, and she even asks about who “The Rock” is. What’s more, she already knows how to ask Alexa to play a song from the top rock station of Amazon Music. One day, we might expect her to learn how to play her owner’s favorite playlist on it.
She can also ask her owner for snacks and scratches.
This parrot loves her peanuts and scratches. She does not hesitate to ask her owners for a peanut for Christmas. But that’s not all — Petra also compliments her owner first by asking for a little scratch on the head, and then thanking her after her owner kisses her. Isn’t she just adorable?
Petra has a lot of hilarious moments as well. Just like when she commends herself after a good poop or imitates both of her owners’ voices.
She likes playing peek-a-boo with her owner, sometimes with their roles reversed. It is just sweet that Petra also loves to hold simple conversations with them. Life could never be boring with Petra dancing and talking in your home.
Petra became widely known after compilations of these clips were uploaded on YouTube.
From Petra’s birth to present, her owners have documented these tiny moments with their camera. This particular video was a compilation of Petra conversing with Alexa along with some of her random and cute moments. The clip was then uploaded to her channel called “PetraGrey” on YouTube on May 10, 2018, and it racked up 7.2 million views.
Not only that, but Petra also received worldwide attention from various media platforms, like Fox News, CBS, and Inside Edition. You could see more fun clips on her channel, or check her out on her Facebook page.
How do parrots learn to talk?
Like Petra, it is not rare for parrots to learn simple words or even phrases of conversation, but do you sometimes wonder how they do that? Experts say that they could imitate various sounds with the use of their vibrating membranes and the presence of the syrinx which is their tool for controlling pitch and volume.
That means, even with parrots’ absence of an important speech organ, like our tongue, they already have the necessary tools to mimic the sounds and words they hear. It is fun to see parrots on the internet reproduce animal sounds or human speech, but it is more impressive to see parrots like Petra using those mimicked sounds to properly converse with you or help you with a conversational AI.
