A woman in Central Florida was prepping and cleaning her house for the impending Hurricane Irma storm when she was greeted by a friendly furry friend.

The white stray dog looked homeless, with matted fur and a malnourished look. However, it seemed friendly and full of cheer when it was walking across the woman’s street. The dog was cautious, but let the woman pet her. The woman quickly got some water and some dog food for the hungry pup.

The stray dog immediately became comfortable with the woman and at one point, even put a paw on her arm. The woman decided she couldn’t let the stray go, especially with the incoming Hurricane Irma heading towards them. While the dog initially seemed hesitant about coming inside, she eventually made her way in.

When she got the dog inside, the woman and her family realized how bad of a shape the dog was in. She was covered in dirt and feces, and her hair was terribly matted everywhere. They also noticed that at some point she had sat in some tar, leaving one side of her body badly covered.

It took a little bit longer before she was able to trust her new friend to check her the full extent of the damage to her body and fur. The woman noted that she “sat on the bathroom floor with her for ages,” before she was able to convince the stray to get close enough to her to check and even longer to get her into the tub. From there, things didn’t seem to get any better. For their first try, the woman was only able to clean the top of her back.

After a nap with their other dog Arthur, they decided to take some clippers to take out some of the matting. While their new friend was terrified, she trusted them enough to let her cut her hair.

The second try at taking a bath was a lot more successful, especially with all of her matted fur shaved away. They let her run around in their backyard afterwards, which was when they were able to see how excited she was to be safe in their backyard.

The woman noted-

“She was so excited she took off and circled our shed before running back to me like she wanted to make sure I was still there. She even brought me sticks she found and wanted to take back inside.”

They took her to the vet the next day, where they discovered that she had no chip and may be even less than a year old. After these discoveries, the woman decided to take to social media to see if they can trace back her owners. She managed to find a few previous owners, until she tracked down the previous owner’s girlfriend. She told the woman that her boyfriend had dropped her out of the truck on the side of a road after owning her for a month.

After hearing this story and taking in all of the information they had heard, they decided that they would keep her for their own to become a part of their family. They named her after Amaterasu, shortened to Amy, and while they are trying to help her cope with her separation anxiety, she’s fitting in beautifully in their home!

She looks so happy in the new pictures, she’s like a brand new dog!
