Abby – the 50lb Cavalier King Charles Spaniel had lost her ability to walk and had to be wheeled around in a cart.

Rescuers concluded that it was the result of extreme overfeeding from her previous owner who fed her human treats and refused to give her any exercise. Abby’s weight blew out of control very quickly.

Abby had no quality of life. Walking one step left her breathless and her respiratory system was in extreme distress.

Brittney Wilk was her rescuer and after seeing Abby’s devastating condition, she was speechless.

“I’ve been in rescue for nearly a decade and have seen some of the worst things you imagine, but I was so shocked when I first saw Abby that I was left speechless. It was like looking at an oversized bulldog like she was blown up and inflated,” she said.

The neighbors from Abby’s original homes were the ones that first took notice of the problem. They saw how rapidly she was gaining weight and how inactive she had become.

“They needed someone to take over her care so they contacted us and we talked with the family, who selflessly entrusted us so that Abby could get the care she needed.”

Abby was put on a strict diet and exercise regime. Because she carried so much weight and was unable to fully support herself, Abby was put on an underwater treadmill to help alleviate the strain.
