It’s hard to live a life away from your family, especially if your family was taken from you by poachers.
That’s what happened to these orphan chimpanzees.
They are victims of the bushmeat and illegal pet trade in Africa. Their mothers and family have been ruthlessly killed by poachers for food and their chimpanzees are sold to the illegal pet trade. There are some chimpanzees who are not caught but now need to fend for themselves.
And now, thanks to Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection, they are given new hope and a new family.
Currently, there are more than 80 orphaned chimpanzees living at the sanctuary. And they just welcome the newest member of their family, Beckley.
Of course, before Beckley could be integrated into the chimp family, they needed to assess and observe him first.
And when he passed with flying colors, they brought him to the sanctuary where he was met with open arms by the other orphan chimpanzees.
Beckley ran to them with open arms, and they even fell over trying to hug each other.
One of the orphan chimpanzees took it upon himself to welcome and introduce Beckley to the rest of the family. Whatever worries the staff may have about Beckley having a hard time with adjustment are gone.
It looks like Beckley’s going to fit right in with the rest of them.
The followers of the LCPR Facebook page are just so amazed at the warm welcome Beckley got.
“I keep watching this it is so wonderful to watch them greeting Beckley with hugs and even little kisses. Marvelous,” Linda Manser said.
“What fun they are having and how heartwarming to see them together in safe surroundings, hugging!! Such hope for the future right there. LCRP is making a big difference,” Jenni Harding added.
“Great that they are all so accepting of the new fella. New adventures ahead for him,” Andrew Oviatt commented.
At the LCPR, the staff gives these orphaned chimpanzees a healthy life.
Most of them are still under five years old but with the care that they give, they hope and plan for them to live up to 60 years old.
Did you know that Liberia is actually home to the second-largest population of western chimpanzees? That’s why poaching is so rampant in this country.
Not only does LCPR take care of these baby chimpanzees, but they also stop the proliferation of poaching and the illegal pet trade of chimpanzees.
If they don’t fight the fight, no one will be able to stop these poachers from stealing the chimpanzees.
Unfortunately, these chimps can no longer go back to the wild, especially without family. They’ll be easy prey for sure.
That’s why LCRP is working hard to build a sanctuary that these chimps will be happy to live in for the years to come.
Eventually, there will be areas for the chimpanzees and when they become adults, they will have a separate area for them. Plus they’ll have an Education Center and Research Institute.
