Orangutans share almost a whopping 97 percent of the same genetic material as humans, as well as being incredibly fast learners. So when it comes to magic tricks, you’d assume that there would be no fooling them – but think again. A video has surfaced of an orangutan’s hilarious reaction to a magic trick, and it’s pure comedy gold.
The video was posted onto YouTube by Dan Zaleski and it has built up an incredible amount of views since it was shared, at just over 63 million. People just couldn’t get enough of the orangutan’s adorable reaction to the magic trick, and it’s truly amazing to see the level of understanding that these monkeys have toward human entertainment.
The video begins as the man shows the orangutan a coffee cup with an object resembling some kind of tree nut in it. The cup is empty apart from the object, and the man tilts it forward so that the monkey can see exactly what’s in there. He then picks up the object and drops it back in the cup just to be sure that the monkey has seen the object and fully understands what is happening before he begins the trick.
If you look closely, you can see the monkey’s eyes following the man’s every move. He’s determined that nobody will be pulling the wool over his eyes!
Now for the fun part. The man places the lid onto the cup and shakes it around as the orangutan watches with interest. He shakes the cup vigorously up and down before subtly dropping the object onto the floor and bringing the cup back up again. He does this in such a quick movement that the orangutan isn’t able to spot his trick.
The man then lifts the lid off the cup and shows his furry friend the inside, which is now empty.
The orangutan stares at the cup for a couple of seconds as if in disbelief, before he opens his mouth wide into a huge grin and collapses with shock onto the floor behind him.
His reaction is truly adorable. He has absolutely no idea where the object has vanished to and probably believes that he has just witnessed some real magic. After lying on the floor for a few seconds, the orangutan pops his head back up and looks into the cup the man is holding, which now has the object back in it again. He looks completely mind-blown!
The video generated lots of comments, and many people had their own theories for the monkey’s dramatic reaction. One person suggested that the monkey was laughing at the man for thinking that he would believe their trick. They commented:
“The orangutan was like, ‘these people think i’m dumb’, and then dies laughing.”
