The birth of a child is always an incredibly special moment, and that also applies to members of the animal kingdom. A lot of people would love to witness a baby birth, especially one of an animal, as it’s a very unique, incredible, and touching moment.
Moments after the little ones are welcomed to the world, mom often proudly poses with her newborn – just like this Orangutan did.
Dana the Orangutan had been expecting a baby for a while, and the staff of the Durell Wildlife Conservation Trust made sure to capture the birth on tape.
It was actually quite a special moment because, according to the conversation, this would be the very first birth of a Sumatran orangutan baby that would be captured on film.
In other words, this would be a pregnancy that was different from the rest, but that’s not the only thing that made this birth so special and unique.
In fact, mommy Dana who was already 25 years old, was dealing with severe medical complications, and the staff wasn’t sure that she or her baby would make it out alive.

The complications actually started during a prior pregnancy, but she could live comfortably without issues – until she got pregnant once again.
To the wildlife conservation trust staff, this pregnancy actually was quite the surprise.
Doctors declared Dana infertile after she had her previous baby- it just seemed evident because her fallopian tubes were completely blocked.
Luckily, there was a head obstetrician at Jersey General Hospital who managed to alleviate the medical issues.
Apparently, it made Dana able to conceive again, but the shelter staff still didn’t expect this recent pregnancy to happen.
As for the father, he’s named “Dagu” and is 28 years old.
Because of the medical complications, a successful childbirth could only be described as a miracle- but that’s exactly what happened.
An infrared camera managed to keep a close eye on Dana and her baby in the weeks before, and we can also see the birth itself in the footage.
There was a professional team of vets and medical personnel looking closely when it all happened, but in the case that nothing went wrong, it was recommended that the birth would proceed as naturally as possible.
Dana delivered her child on her own, and she’s so proud of her baby!
Mommy spends a few moments in awe, and you can just see how happy she is.
Her first duty as a mom? Cuddle your newborn baby of course, as well as cleaning up a bit.
“She’s starting to remove the amniotic sac,” one of the staff members told.
It’s quite a difference from human childbirth. Dana wasn’t surrounded by medical professionals who helped her throughout the birth itself, she delivered all on her own and was in charge of everything.
After a little while, the baby orangutan starts moving and making typical baby noises.
“Aww, cries just like a human baby, it’s beautiful. My heart just melted <3″ one of the viewers wrote in the YouTube comments.
You can also hear another screeching noise, coming from the background.
It was actually Dagu, who reacted to seeing his newborn for the first time.
Dana then takes her baby and heads over to Dagu and the observer’s area, to proudly show off her baby to the rest of the world!
“This is amazing, she’s come to show us the baby – that is fantastic!”
A new baby in the wildlife park is always great news, but this particular birth was definitely extra joyful. After all, they didn’t expect things to go so smoothly.
Additionally, the Sumatran orangutan is considered to be critically endangered, but they can add one to their population now.
The staff gave the baby the name “Keajaiban”, or “Kea”, and it actually holds a special meaning- “miracle.”
The name couldn’t be any more fitting.
