Some people know what it’s like to have bothersome neighbors.
You know the ones — always peeking over the fence, stopping by unannounced, letting things wander over onto your property etc.
Sometimes, however, letting things wander over onto your property isn’t a bad thing. At least in this particular case where the thing wandering is a friendly 14-year-old dog named Oliver.
Oliver is a Golden Retriever who makes sure to visit his neighbors every day.
You heard that correctly, Oliver doesn’t miss a day when it comes to stopping by his neighbor’s house.
Melissa and her family live next door to Oliver and his family. She says that he’s been making daily visits to their home for nine years, starting from the day they moved in.
Hilariously, Oliver keeps a tight schedule. He normally arrives sometime between 7 and 7:30 am and stays throughout the day. But when he’s ready to go home, he lets Melissa know and she lets him out.
“He’s very serious about it. He beelines right to his house. He doesn’t go off-path,” she says.
She also says that he has perfect timing. At any given moment, Oliver might show up for a family event and stroll through a party. Fortunately, Melissa has dogs of her own so he’s always around company.
“He’s like a wandering old grandpa,” Melissa jokes.
He really is. He moves slowly and with purpose to his next destination. But Oliver is always welcomed with open arms.
“I’m always happy to see Oliver. Always.”
Oliver’s owner, Sue, is aware that he likes to wander around the neighborhood and allows him to do so. She states that Oliver having a GPS tracker has been their “saving grace.”
But there hasn’t been a time where he doesn’t come back home which is oftentimes around 6 pm.
Additionally, she says that Oliver wandering has always been a part of who he is.
“From a puppy on, he’s just had this spirit where he’s wanted to kind of wander.”

In fact, you could call Oliver a neighborhood dog. Everyone seems to know him and always allows him to spend time at their house.
Because Oliver is 14-years-old, he has difficulty seeing and hearing but he knows the neighborhood so well that he always knows where he’s going.
“He has it all mapped in his brain,” Sue says. “He knows exactly where he’s going.”
Nowadays, instead of wandering the neighborhood as he did so frequently before, he spends much more time at Melissa’s house.
Melissa even says that because of Oliver’s strict schedule, he gives her and her family a sense of schedule as well.

“He’s gotten me through the quarantine,” Melissa admits.
Sue is beyond grateful that they have such welcoming neighbors who love and care for Oliver the same way that she and her family does.
“I’m so grateful that somebody else loves our dog as much as we love him,” she says.
Sue also sees Oliver’s journeys as something bigger — as a way to touch other people’s lives.
“He just has this desire to kind of go out and touch other people’s lives. And then he comes back!”
