Have you ever thought about how your life will be once you hit your golden years? How will you feel once you start aging and slowly losing your strength and thus your mobility ease?

Most people tend to block this kind of thoughts, especially those who still have many decades ahead of them until they reach that point. One could argue that is this is what is supposed to happen in life as we grow older, however, another would respond that still, it’s a “frightening” image to conjure up.

Like with all living beings, dogs tend to grow older, although their lives might be less tiring than the humans and much shorter, our cute four-legged friends can become really limited in their movements once they hit the ten-year mark, don’t forget that 10 years in dog years is the equivalent of 75 in human!

Our story today is about three adorable “seniors”. Three lovely dogs, two pugs by the names of George, 13, Bodhi, 10, and a Boston terrier, Sam, 10.

They were adopted by Sonya Karimi from New Orleans, Louisiana, and her partner.

Due to the progressed age of the dogs, Sonya quickly noticed that they were having issues moving around and going up the stairs. Unable to stay still and just seeing them struggling, Sonya decided to do something to help her furry friends!

Sonya explained to Metro UK how seeing her dog Bodhi struggling with the stairs gave her an idea, “It only really bothered him when he was walking up and down the stairs – I’ve worked with geriatrics in the past and I have geriatric dogs so I thought there had to be some way to make it easier for them to get upstairs”.

And that’s how the idea of the “doggie-vator” came to life!

The “doggie-vator” was created by Sonya, herself, with the help of her boyfriend, Zach, and his two retired engineer parents. The team of four constructed a stairlift made of wood that would get the dogs upstairs/ downstairs quite quickly.

This great DIY project took only three months to finish, and it was actually done during the three-month quarantine!

They used wood and a car motor, so it will be able to be sturdier and carry more than one dog each time. Based on the pictures you can see that it looks quite professional. One is for sure, the 3 adorable friends are really enjoying their rides up and down the stairs.

According to Sonya, “The two older pugs love it especially – they won’t use the stairs, they will sit there and wait until the ride is ready for them and it’s so cute”.

It’s really beautiful when you see people really taking care of their pets with respect and love, taking into consideration their conditions and age. Sonya’s heartwarming action should be an example to all of us because at some point in our future we might be in the shoes of those lovely doggies. Love your pets as much they love you!
