From the moment a dog’s puppies are born, she will do everything she can to protect them. In most cases, a mama dog will feel safe and secure in the environment she has given birth in. But for dogs in the wild, having pups is a much more stressful experience.

One stray dog in Korea had given birth to a litter of puppies underneath a pile of wood in a construction site. The team at Korean K9 Rescue had been trying to capture her for several days, but, nervous and distrustful of her rescuers, she had managed to avoid them so far.

It was a race against time to pull the dog and her pups out of the site, which the locals had warned was being demolished. The team kept their distance for a while, leaving food and water for the hungry family.

Finally, Karlee, a dog rescuer involved in the operation, managed to get close to the little ones. But mom still wasn’t keen on the human attention.

“She was very skittish, she wouldn’t let anyone touch her,”Karlee recalled.

Jeju island, where the dog had been found, didn’t have the traps that rescuers commonly use in the US to bring an animal to safety. So the team tried using the mom’s puppies to catch her in a number of different ways.

First, they put the pups in the back of their car, hoping that mom would jump in with them, but no luck. They then tried luring her in with food, and put the puppies in a secluded area to try and trap mom. But nothing was working.

After about a week, it was obvious that the team needed a different plan of action. One of the local community members who had been feeding the mom came to Karlee with an idea. He suggested that if he took the puppies in his car, mom would follow.

Karlee, who lives around a 10-minute drive from where the puppies had been found, was initially skeptical that the plan would be successful. She said,

“I was like, ‘This isn’t going to work, this is crazy!'”

But as soon as the local put the puppies on the back of his truck and started to drive, mom bolted after him.

The journey was tense and took much longer than usual. Karlee and the local were driving as slow as possible with their hazard lights on, and took a lot of back roads, fearful of what might happen to mom if she strayed too far out onto the road. They made stops along the way to give mom a break from running and offer her some water.

Karlee couldn’t believe that the mama dog was really chasing after the car, but said that it showed “the power of what a mom is capable of”.

Eventually, the two cars and the doggo family arrived safely at Karlee’s house. Karlee let out the puppies in her back yard and mom ran straight to them.

The story doesn’t quite end here, though. Karlee still couldn’t get the mom to come into her house. Instead, mom would jump over Karlee’s fence, returning to her pups whenever she pleased. She was scaring Karlee’s neighbors, and Karlee was desperate to gain her trust.

Finally, after cooking some chicken, Karlee managed to lure mom into her house. It took a while for the timid pup to get comfortable, but eventually, she settled into her temporary home.

There is a big issue with stray dogs on Jeju Island, and Korea Biz Wire reported last year that 5,828 animals were brought to animal shelters in 2017, and 7,979 in 2018. But thanks to rescue groups like Korean K9 Rescue, more and more of these strays have found their forever homes.

The stray pups have all been adopted, and mom, who has been named Hinsoona, is still up for adoption. You can apply to adopt a dog with Korean K9 Rescue here.

The video below tells the full rescue story of Hinsoona and her pups.
