For Abigeal, a stray dog, her life had taken a dramatic turn when she was found at a construction site in Miami, barely surviving on her own. In September, 2016, she was discovered struggling to keep not only herself, but also 10 newborn puppies alive. Due to her lack of food, Abi was barely able to produce enough milk to feed her pups and keep herself going. However, this loving mom refused to leave her pups behind, in spite of her failing health.
No Paws Left Behind received a call about a dog and her litter of puppies living in a construction site, and immediately took action to save this struggling family.
No Paws Left Behind is an animal rescue center, serving the stray and abandoned pets of South Florida for more than 10 years. Thankfully, rescuers were able to secure both Abi and all 10 of her puppies, getting them the nourishment and support they needed. Now, all 10 puppies have found their forever homes thanks to No Paws Left Behind, and now it’s Mom’s turn.
Due to lack of water and food, Abi was barely able to feed her puppies and herself, leaving the family extremely malnourished and dehydrated.
If the family had remained in such conditions it would have been very unlikely that they would have survived. Initially, Abi was hesitant around the rescuers until they earned her trust. Once they got her to relax, her sweet and loving spirit finally began to show.
This patient mama never gave up on her family and amazed the rescue center with her endless love for her puppies, never failing to take care of them. For the puppies, their stories ended happily with all 10 being adopted – yet, Abi remains at the shelter, looking for a home of her own.
“She raised all 10 of those puppies until they were adopted,” Alexandra Kalymeras, Abi’s foster mom, told iHeart Dogs. “She never snapped at anyone or any of her puppies. She was tireless in caring for them. One of the best mommies I’ve ever fostered.”
Now, Abi is looking for her own fur-ever home after dedicatedly raising her puppies.
Slowly, Abi got to see each of her puppies start their new lives with their own loving families, but has yet to be adopted herself. No Paws Left Behind and her foster mom both hope that Abi will find a home soon, where she will finally get the break and that same unconditional love that she deserves. Thanks to her foster mom, Kalymeras, Abi has been fully socialized and is ready to be adopted.
