We often hear about humans adopting dogs, but have you ever heard of a monkey acting as a dog’s caretaker? Well, apparently that’s a thing. A macaque monkey has reportedly taken on the role as “mother” to a stray puppy in India.
This wouldn’t seem as odd if the pair had been raised together by humans or on a sanctuary, but what’s remarkable about this unlikely pair is that they came together in the wild.
The monkey was caught on tape carrying the pup under her arm while they strolled through the streets of India. The local community was so enamored with this odd couple that they made sure they were healthy and well fed.
However, the monkey is said to always make sure that the puppy eats first.
“People who have seen them spoke of their strong mutual affection and described their bond as the most caring thing in the world- to take care of a puppy in danger and protect him like a parent,” Zee News wrote. “Their undying affection gives us a valuable lesson about relationships.”
The local forest department has reportedly taken the puppy into custody. According to Pawpulous, the monkey may have escaped. Reports are unclear since they are being translated from Tamil to English.
